Blog Information About Betacap Scalp Treatment

Betacap Scalp Treatment

Betacap is a skin treatment used on the scalp to treat itching, sore and irritated skin. It is a most useful treatment to help ease symptoms of eczema, contact dermatitis, and psoriasis.

Betacap is available on prescription from Access Doctor as it is a strong form of corticosteroid and is usually prescribed by a doctor when other skin treatments have not worked.

It should only ever be used as instructed by your doctor and you should never share Betacap with other people.

While Betacap is often prescribed to treat inflammatory conditions on the scalp, such as dermatitis and psoriasis, it does not help in the treatment of other skin conditions such as impetigo, rosacea and acne.

This medication is suitable for adults aged 18 and over. Your doctor may recommend a different treatment for children and teenagers under 18.

Information Access Doctor will need

Your doctor will need to know about any allergies or any prescription medications that you take before prescribing Betacap. This is to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction to the treatment, or if it will interfere with or reduce the effectiveness of any other prescription medications you take.

You must inform us if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any medications in the past. It is also important to let us know if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

As we cannot conduct a physical examination with you online, you must tell us if you have a skin infection or have any cuts, scratches or broken skin on your scalp, whether or not the skin is red or inflamed.

How to use Betacap

Your Access Doctor will tell you how and when to use Betacap and it is important that you read and understand the patient leaflet that comes with the product.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you may be instructed to apply Betacap to your scalp once or twice per day. Your doctor will also tell you how much to use each time you treat your scalp so that you are using enough of the solution for it to be effective, but not too much so that any of the solution is wasted.

You should thoroughly wash and dry your hands before each treatment and then measure out the recommended amount to use into the palm of your hand. Using your fingertips, spread the solution gently over your scalp in sweeping motions in the direction that your hair grows until a thin layer of solution covers the area of irritated skin.

Once the Betacap solution has been applied, wash and dry your hands thoroughly to remove any of the solution from your hands.

Do not use Betacap at the same time as using other products on your skin, such as a skin moisturiser or skin lotion or hair products. Wait at least 30 minutes after applying Betacap before using any other products on the area.

Handy tips when using Betacap

If using Betacap before going to bed, the solution can rub off onto your pillows and bedding, so it may be better to use the solution during the day. However, if it is more convenient to use at night, then you can spread a towel over your pillow to help keep it clean.

Use Betacap on the affected areas of your scalp only. There is no need to cover all of your scalp in the solution. Take care not to apply Betacap to areas of broken skin such as cuts and scratches on your scalp.

You may need to use Betacap twice per day until your symptoms come under control. You may only need to use it once per day once your scalp condition improves.

If you wash your hair before applying Betacap, make sure your hair is properly dry before applying the Betacap solution.

After applying Betacap, do not use a hairdryer to dry your hair. Let the solution dry naturally for it to be most effective at treating your scalp condition.

Always check with your doctor about how long to use the solution. See your doctor if your scalp condition becomes worse or you don’t see any improvement after using Betacap for at least two to four weeks.

Should you miss a treatment, don’t worry. Either apply it as soon as you remember or if it is close to your next treatment time, just leave it until your next application time.

Experiencing side effects

For first-time users, you may experience a mild burning or stinging feeling that lasts for a few minutes after application. This will usually subside after a few days of use as your condition comes under control.

Serious side effects from using Betacap are very rare. Less than 1 in 10,000 users have had side effects from using any betamethasone containing products, such as Betacap. However, you should speak with your doctor should you experience any concerning side effects or reactions to using the solution.

Is it safe to use for long-term use?

Like most steroid treatments, it isn’t recommended to use topical steroid treatments such as Betacap for a long time without a break. Once your scalp condition is under control your doctor will recommend reducing the number of treatments per day until you don’t need it any longer.

If your scalp condition persists, your doctor may recommend switching you to an alternative treatment.
