Malaria is a tropical disease that is spread by mosquitoes. It is a serious infection and if left undiagnosed, it can be fatal. Symptoms of infection include a high temperature of 38°C or more, shivers, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.

How is malaria transmitted?

Malaria is caused by certain types of Plasmodium parasite, which are mainly spread by female Anopheles mosquitoes. These insects tend to bite at dusk and during the night, and the parasite passes into the bloodstream of those they bite.

Where does malaria occur?

Malaria is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical locations where Anopheles mosquitoes thrive. Affected areas include large parts of South Asia and Africa, as well as parts of South and Central America, the Middle East and the Caribbean.

Are there drugs that can prevent malaria?

Yes, you can get medications from a travel health pharmacy that prevent malaria. The right one for you will depend on factors including where you are travelling to, how long you are going for, your age, personal medical history and whether you are pregnant.

What causes jet lag?

Jet lag happens when your regular sleeping pattern is disrupted after a long flight.

How long does jet lag last?

Can I prevent jet lag?

You can’t entirely prevent jet lag, but there are things you can do to minimise its effects. Melatonin can be used to help reduce the symptoms of jet lag. This hormone is involved in regulating sleep, and melatonin supplements may help to cut the time it takes to fall asleep and reduce tiredness during the day.

What causes motion sickness?

Motion sickness happens as a result of repeated movements, such as moving up and down in a boat or travelling over bumps and around corners in a car. It happens because the signals sent from your inner ear to your brain are different from the signals sent from your eyes, causing confusion and making you feel unwell.

Who might get motion sickness?

Anyone can suffer from motion sickness, but it’s most common in children and pregnant women.

How can I reduce motion sickness?

There are certain things you can do to minimise motion sickness, including reducing motion (for example, by sitting in the middle or a boat or front of a car), looking straight ahead rather than to the side, breathing fresh air (for example, by opening a window in your car) and breaking up journeys. You should also avoid reading or watching screens while in motion and refrain from eating heavy meals immediately before travel.

Are there tablets for motion sickness?

Yes, there are tablets you can take for motion sickness. Antihistamines can be used to help prevent nausea and vomiting, and antiemetic drugs can be used to treat the symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
