Answers to the most commonly asked questions about Access Doctor and how it works.
There are many STIs to be aware of that you may be at risk of contracting if you do not take the appropriate precautions. They include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, genital herpes, genital warts, pubic lice, syphilis, scabies and human papillomavirus (HPV).
Common symptoms of STIs in men include discomfort while urinating, discharge from the penis tip, itchiness or redness, a frequent need to urinate, lumps on the skin, pain in the testicles and sores or ulcers. If you have any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor or visit a sexual health clinic as soon as possible.
Common STI symptoms in women include a change in discharge from the vagina, pain (potentially including during sex), itchiness or redness, heavier periods, spotting between periods, needing to urinate more often and/or discomfort when urinating, lumps on the skin or ulcers or sores. If you experience any of these warning signs, you should see your doctor or go to a sexual health clinic as soon as possible.
It’s important to realise that not all STIs have symptoms. In fact, many don’t. This means that if you may have been exposed to an infection, the only way to know for sure if you have it is to get yourself tested.
The sexual health treatments available for STIs depend on the specific type of infection you have. Bacterial infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea can be cured with antibiotics, as long as the treatment starts early enough. The symptoms of viral infections such as genital herpes can be managed with antiviral medications.
The short answer to this is to have safer sex. For example, you can reduce the risk of all STIs by using condoms for all types of penetrative sex, and you may want to consider using condoms for oral sex too. Reducing the number of sexual partners you have will also lower your risk, as will having non-penetrative sex. Make sure that you get tested for STIs before you have sex with a new partner, and suggest that they get tested as well.
