When acid from the stomach makes its way up to the oesophagus, it can cause symptoms of heartburn. There are many known causes for acid reflux and this can affect the severity of the symptoms you experience. You can treat acid reflux quickly and effectively.
Acid reflux occurs as stomach fluids passes back towards the oesophagus. It is also called gastroesophageal reflux or GORD.
The lower oesophageal sphincter (LES) at the end of the oesophagus is a circular band of muscle. When it's working properly, it relaxes and opens when you swallow food, it then tightens and closes again. Sometimes though, it doesn't close fully and this is what causes the stomach acid to pass up into a region it shouldn't, this is referred to as acid reflux.
The most common symptoms of acid reflux include
Typically, such effects intensify if you lay down or lean over, which appear to flare up after eating.
Although there are over the counter medications available, they do not rival the effectiveness of the prescription only treatments that we stock in AccessDoctor. With a variety of different options to choose from, you’ll find the one that works the best for you.
Maintaining a healthy routine: Apart from medications, maintaining a healthy routine can help you control or entirely prevent acid reflux. Modifying your diet, quitting smoking and reducing alcohol intake can work wonders.
Eating smaller quantities: You can always consider eating in small portions, to reduce the risk of acid reflux. Other postural tips include trying not to sleep or lay down for at least two to three hours after eating. If you lay down then seek to lift your head at 45 degrees by putting a pillow under your chest and head above hip line, this will provide gravitational resistance to reflux.
Various forms of acid reflux treatments are available, they include lansoprazole, omeprazole and esomeprazole. All of these belong to a group of medications known as proton pump inhibitors, please see individual product FAQs for more details.
