Emla Cream

What is Emla Cream?

Emla cream is a local anaesthetic agent, it contains short-acting local anaesthetic medications called lidocaine and prilocaine.  It has many clinical uses, when applied to the skin it numbs the area. This makes it an effective treatment for patients who suffer from Premature Ejaculation (PE).

How does Emla Cream work?

As a mild anaesthetic, when applied to the skin, Emla Cream blocks sensation.

Emla Cream for Premature Ejaculation: This numbing effect reduces sensitivity and thus (when applied to the penis) it prolongs sexual intercourse. After applying the cream, you should wait for up to 20 minutes before engaging in sexual activity, remember to wash the exposed skin prior to intercourse as Emla cream can cause irritation symptoms for your partner.

How do I use Emla Cream?

To effectively use this treatment, please follow the instructions below:

For Premature Ejaculation (Males)

1. Apply a pea-sized amount of cream to cover the glans penis (the end of the penis, if you have foreskin you will need to retract this first)

2. Apply 15-20 minutes before intercourse

4. Wash your hands thoroughly after application
5. Wash the Emla cream off your penis after 20 minutes

For Skin Numbing (Tattoo, Piercing  and Aesthetics)

1. Apply a thin film on the area that requires numbing.

2. Apply 11 hours before

3. Wash your hands thoroughly after application

4. Wash the Emla cream before the procedure

Side effects & precautions

Please be aware that some condoms can be damaged by Emla, you should seek other contraception/protection methods.

If the cream gets into your eyes, rinse thoroughly ideally with saline solution.

The cream should not be applied to skin that is affected by eczema or other rashes.

The cream should not be applied to broken/cut skin.

Common side effects:

• Pale, pink, or swollen skin at the site of application.

• Itching or tingling at the site of application

• Warm sensation at the site of application

Less common & rare side-effects:

• Blue/grey skin

• Methemoglobinemia; headache, shortness of breath, nausea, rapid heart rate, fatigue and lethargy, confusion or stupor, loss of consciousness.

You should contact your doctor immediately if you notice any of these symptoms or any others.

Avoid the cream if you are allergic to local anaesthetic agents such as

bupivacaine, ropivacaine.

Avoid the cream if you and your partner are trying for a baby.
