Dermovate ointment contains clobetasol propionate 0.05%, a very potent steroid for severe psoriasis, eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions that haven’t responded to weaker steroids. The ointment is greasy and seals in moisture, so it suits thick, dry or scaly patches. For adults who’ve already been prescribed it, after an online consultation.
Dermovate is the strongest type of steroid for the skin. Use it only on the patches it was prescribed for, not on your face, genitals or skin folds, and for no longer than 4 weeks without a review. Don’t stop suddenly after long use; reduce it gradually. We supply it only to adults who’ve already been prescribed Dermovate, and not in pregnancy.

Dermovate ointment contains clobetasol propionate 0.05%, a very potent corticosteroid (steroid). It calms inflammation in the skin, reducing redness, swelling and itching. It’s used for severe or stubborn skin conditions that haven’t improved with weaker steroids, including psoriasis (but not widespread plaque psoriasis), severe eczema, lichen planus and discoid lupus.
The ointment has a greasy base that seals moisture into the skin, so it suits thick, dry, scaly or cracked patches, such as psoriasis on the hands, feet, elbows and knees. Because it holds the medicine against the skin, more may be absorbed than from the cream. If your skin is moist or weeping, Dermovate cream may suit you better; both contain the same medicine at the same strength.
Dermovate is a prescription-only medicine. We supply it to adults who’ve already been prescribed it by their GP or a dermatologist, after a short online consultation reviewed by one of our prescribers. If approved before 3pm, Monday to Friday, your order is dispatched the same day in plain, discreet packaging: choose Royal Mail Tracked 48, Tracked 24 or Special Delivery guaranteed by 1pm next working day. Dermovate ointment may be suitable if you:
• are 18 or over;
• have been prescribed Dermovate before by your GP or a dermatologist, for the same condition and the same area of skin;
• know how much to use and for how long.
Don’t use Dermovate:
• on your face, eyelids, genitals or skin folds (groin, armpits, under the breasts);
• on skin that’s infected (with bacteria, a fungus or a virus such as cold sores or chickenpox);
• for acne, rosacea, the rash around the mouth called perioral dermatitis, or itching around the bottom or genitals;
• for itching without a rash;
• if you’re allergic to clobetasol or any ingredient.
We can’t supply Dermovate if you’re pregnant. Please see your GP or midwife.
See your GP or dermatologist instead if Dermovate hasn’t been prescribed for you before, if your skin is getting worse or isn’t improving after 2 to 4 weeks, if you need it continuously, or if your psoriasis is widespread.
Dermovate ointment is used for severe or stubborn inflammatory skin conditions that haven’t improved with weaker steroids, especially thick, dry or scaly patches. These include psoriasis (but not widespread plaque psoriasis), severe eczema, lichen planus and discoid lupus. It contains clobetasol propionate 0.05%, a very potent steroid.
Use the form you’ve been prescribed. The ointment is greasy and seals in moisture, so it works well on thick, dry, scaly or cracked skin, such as psoriasis on the hands, feet, elbows and knees. The cream is lighter and suits moist or weeping skin. Both contain the same medicine at the same strength.
They contain the same amount of clobetasol, but the greasy ointment base holds the medicine against the skin, so more may be absorbed. That’s why the ointment is used on thick patches, and why it’s important not to use more than prescribed.
Complete our short online consultation, telling us who prescribed Dermovate for you and what it’s for. One of our prescribers checks it’s still right for you. If approved, our GPhC-registered pharmacy (No. 9011198) dispenses it, and orders approved before 3pm, Monday to Friday, are dispatched the same day.
Apply a thin layer once or twice a day to the affected patches only, and no more than 50g a week. Use it for no longer than 4 weeks without a review. A fingertip unit (about half a gram) covers an area the size of two adult hands.
If a steroid cream or ointment has been used every day for a long time, stopping it can cause a reaction: redness, burning, itching and peeling, sometimes worse than the original condition. The MHRA says it’s linked to long-term continuous use. To lower the risk, use Dermovate only as prescribed, for short courses, and reduce it gradually after long use. If it happens, speak to a healthcare professional before using a steroid again.
Dermovate ointment contains paraffin. Clothing, bedding and dressings with dried ointment on them catch fire more easily, even after washing. Don’t smoke or go near naked flames while using it, and wash fabrics often.
We don’t supply Dermovate if you’re pregnant. The product information says it should be used in pregnancy only if the benefit outweighs the risk. Please speak to your GP or midwife.
Apply sparingly, for short term use ONLY.
Apply Sparingly for short term use ONLY. For external USE ONLY. Spread thinly on the affected skin only.
