Doxycycline is a daily antibiotic tablet widely used to prevent malaria in travellers visiting high-risk regions. Taken as a single 100mg capsule each day, it stops the malaria parasite developing after a bite from an infected mosquito. It is one of the most affordable antimalarials and is suitable for most destinations where malaria is present, including parts of Africa, Asia and South America.
To work properly, Doxycycline must be started before you travel, taken every day while you are in the malaria zone, and continued for a period after you return. Because it is a prescription-only medicine, you'll need a short online consultation so our prescribers can confirm it is right for you before it is dispensed and delivered from our UK pharmacy.

Take one 100mg tablet at the same time each day. Start 2 days before you enter a malaria area, continue every day while you are there, and keep taking it for 4 weeks after you leave. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water and a meal, and stay upright for at least 30 minutes afterwards to protect your throat and stomach.
Common side effects include sensitivity to sunlight, mild stomach upset and, less often, thrush. Use a high-factor sunscreen and avoid prolonged sun exposure. If side effects concern you, our prescribers can discuss alternatives during your consultation.
Start Doxycycline two days before you enter a malaria area. Take it every day while you are there and continue for four weeks after you leave to stay fully protected.
Doxycycline is usually the most affordable antimalarial option, which is why it is our recommended starting point for many travellers. The right choice still depends on your destination and health, which our prescribers confirm during your free consultation.
Doxycycline can interact with some medicines, including the contraceptive pill and certain antacids. List everything you take during your online consultation so our prescribers can check it is safe for you.
Take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one — never take two at once. Missing doses reduces your protection, so set a daily reminder to stay on track.
Yes. Doxycycline is a prescription-only medicine, so you'll complete a short, free online consultation. Our prescribers review your answers and, if suitable, the medication is dispensed and delivered from our UK pharmacy.
Doxycycline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may burn more easily. Use a high-factor sunscreen, wear a hat and protective clothing, and limit time in strong midday sun while taking it.
