Valaciclovir is an antiviral medicine and the generic equivalent of Valtrex, containing the same active ingredient. It's a prodrug of aciclovir, meaning the body converts it into aciclovir once absorbed — valaciclovir is simply taken up more efficiently, which is why it can be dosed less often than plain aciclovir. It works by stopping the varicella-zoster virus (the virus behind shingles) from multiplying, giving the immune system a chance to bring the outbreak under control faster and ease symptoms. Valaciclovir is also licensed for genital herpes and cold sores, but for shingles it's prescribed at a higher dose of 1000mg (1g), taken three times a day for 7 days, and works best when started within 72 hours of the rash first appearing.

Valaciclovir stops the varicella-zoster virus from copying itself, which allows the immune system to bring the shingles outbreak under control more quickly and can reduce how severe and how long the rash and pain are. For shingles, take 1000mg (1g) three times a day for 7 days. Swallow the tablets whole with water, and they can be taken with or without food. Try to space doses evenly through the day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it's nearly time for your next one, in which case skip the missed dose and carry on as normal — never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Yes, in terms of the medicine itself. Valaciclovir is the active ingredient, and Valtrex is simply the original branded version of it. Generic valaciclovir has to meet the same regulatory standards for absorption and effect as the brand, so there's no clinical difference in how well it works — the main differences are the manufacturer, tablet appearance, and price.
As soon as you can. Valaciclovir works by stopping the virus multiplying, and it has the most impact while that process is still in its early stages, so starting within 72 hours of the rash first appearing gives you the best chance of a shorter, milder outbreak. If you're just past that window, it's still worth getting assessed, especially if new blisters are still forming, as treatment can still be considered.
No. Valaciclovir treats the current outbreak and can make future flare-ups less frequent or less severe, but it doesn't clear the varicella-zoster virus from the body — it remains dormant in nerve tissue afterwards, which is true of all currently available antivirals for shingles. Treatment is about managing the outbreak and reducing complications rather than curing the underlying infection.
Tell your prescriber if you have reduced kidney function, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, as these all need to be factored into the decision. Valaciclovir is cleared by the kidneys, so reduced kidney function may mean a lower dose and a reminder to stay well hydrated during treatment. In pregnancy and breastfeeding, it's only used when a doctor judges it clearly necessary, weighing the benefits of treating your symptoms against any potential risk.
