Wegovy contains semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that works by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone in the body.
It works in three main ways: it reduces appetite by acting on receptors in the brain's hunger centres, making you feel fuller sooner and less hungry between meals; it slows the rate at which food leaves the stomach (gastric emptying), helping you feel satisfied for longer after eating; and it helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release in response to meals.
Wegovy is not a stimulant and does not work by speeding up your metabolism. Instead, it helps you eat less by supporting your body's natural appetite regulation. Combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, it has been shown in clinical trials to help adults lose an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks.
Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once‑weekly prescription injection licensed in the UK for chronic weight management in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over. It is prescribed for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or more (obesity), or a BMI of 27 kg/m² or more (overweight) and at least one weight‑related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. Wegovy is used alongside a reduced‑calorie eating plan and increased physical activity. It works by mimicking a natural hormone (GLP-1) that helps regulate appetite, making it easier to feel satisfied with smaller portions and reduce food cravings. Access Doctor provides Wegovy as a private prescription option for suitable patients after an online consultation.
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It supports weight loss in three key ways: it slows the emptying of the stomach, helping you feel fuller for longer after meals; it acts on receptors in the brain to reduce appetite and food cravings; and it lowers overall daily calorie intake, which, when combined with a healthy lifestyle, leads to meaningful, sustained weight reduction. In landmark clinical trials, individuals using Wegovy alongside diet and exercise achieved an average weight loss of around 15% of their starting body weight over 68 weeks. Many patients searching "Wegovy for weight loss UK" are looking for exactly this kind of clinically backed, long‑term support.
The Wegovy dosing uses a gradual dose‑escalation to help your body adjust and minimise gut‑related side effects: Month 1: 0.25 mg once weekly Month 2: 0.5 mg once weekly Month 3: 1 mg once weekly Month 4: 1.7 mg once weekly Month 5 and ongoing: 2.4 mg once weekly (full maintenance dose) If you forget a dose and there are more than 48 hours until your next scheduled one, take it as soon as you remember. If less than 48 hours remain, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Your Access Doctor clinician will tailor the schedule to your needs and explain how to use the Wegovy injection pen correctly.
The most frequently reported Wegovy side effects are gastrointestinal and often occur when starting or increasing the dose. They are usually mild to moderate and improve with time: feeling sick (nausea), diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal (tummy) pain, headache, tiredness, and dizziness. Starting low and increasing slowly helps minimise these effects. Because Wegovy can cause dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea, it's important to drink plenty of fluids. At Access Doctor, your prescriber will advise you on how to manage these common reactions and when to seek help.
Wegovy is not suitable for everyone. It carries a warning about a potential risk of thyroid C‑cell tumours and must not be used if you or a family member have ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Other important risks include: inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) — seek urgent medical help if you experience severe, persistent abdominal pain that may go through to your back; gallbladder problems, including gallstones; severe hypoglycaemia in people with diabetes, especially if combined with insulin or sulphonylureas; kidney injury (from dehydration); increased heart rate; and mental health changes (monitor for low mood or suicidal thoughts). Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your Wegovy pen. Through Access Doctor's online consultation, your medical history is carefully reviewed to ensure Wegovy is appropriate for you.
Wegovy is a prescription‑only medicine (POM), so you cannot buy it over the counter — you need a valid prescription from a UK‑registered healthcare professional. The list price for a month's supply of Wegovy (four pre‑filled pens) on a private prescription is typically between £195 and £300, depending on the dose strength. At Access Doctor, we offer competitive Wegovy pricing, and your final cost is clearly shown once you select your treatment during the online consultation. It is also worth checking if your private health insurance covers weight‑loss medications. On the NHS, Wegovy is only available through specialist weight management services for people who meet specific criteria; many people therefore choose the private route for faster, more direct access.
Both Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but they are licensed for different conditions and have different dosing. Wegovy is licensed in the UK for chronic weight management in adults and adolescents, with a target maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly. Ozempic is licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, available in doses of 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg once weekly. While Ozempic is sometimes prescribed off‑label for weight loss, Wegovy's higher dose and specific indication make it the preferred option for significant, sustained weight reduction. At Access Doctor, we supply Wegovy as a dedicated weight‑management treatment, following a thorough online consultation.
Each Wegovy pen is a pre‑filled, single‑dose device. Here's a simple guide: 1. Wash your hands. Choose an injection site: lower stomach (abdomen), thigh, or upper arm. Avoid the 5 cm area around your belly button. 2. Rotate the injection site each week to reduce skin irritation. 3. Clean the skin with an alcohol wipe. Pull off the pen cap. 4. Press the pen firmly against your skin until the yellow bar stops moving. You'll hear two clicks — continue holding for about 6–10 seconds to deliver the full dose. 5. Dispose of the used pen in a sharps bin. Never reuse a pen. You can inject at any time of day, with or without food. The Wegovy injection pen from Access Doctor comes with full instructions, and we are here to support you if you have any questions.
In clinical studies, many people began to see Wegovy results within the first few months of treatment, with steady progress often visible by week 16–20 when the full maintenance dose had been reached. Maximum results typically occurred around 68 weeks. Individual outcomes vary based on diet, physical activity, and adherence to treatment. Your Access Doctor prescriber will review your progress after 12–16 weeks on the full 2.4 mg dose. If you haven't lost at least 5% of your initial body weight by then, they will discuss whether continuing treatment is the right choice for you.
Wegovy is not a treatment for type 2 diabetes itself, but it can be prescribed for weight management to individuals who are overweight or have obesity and also have type 2 diabetes as a weight‑related comorbidity. Clinical evidence shows that people with diabetes using Wegovy can achieve meaningful weight loss and improved blood sugar control. If you take insulin or sulphonylureas, your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication to reduce the risk of low blood sugar. Your Access Doctor consultation includes a full health review to guide safe use.
NHS England guidance (NICE) recommends Wegovy for people with: a BMI of at least 35 and a weight‑related health problem (such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes), or a BMI of 30–34.9 and they meet the criteria for referral to a specialist weight management service. The NHS supply is currently limited, and there can be long waiting times. If you don't qualify for NHS Wegovy, or prefer a quicker, more accessible route, Access Doctor offers private online prescriptions after a review by a UK‑registered clinician. This means you can start your Wegovy treatment journey without delay, with discreet home delivery.
Wegovy is designed for long‑term weight management, not a short‑term fix. If you stop injecting Wegovy without implementing lasting lifestyle changes, appetite and hunger may return to previous levels, and weight regain is common. It works best as part of an ongoing programme that includes healthy eating and regular activity. If you're thinking about stopping, your Access Doctor prescriber can help you create a transition plan to maintain your progress.
Wegovy (semaglutide) is given as a subcutaneous injection once weekly. It can be injected into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites each week.
Starting dose: 0.25 mg once weekly for 4 weeks.
Dose escalation: Your dose will be gradually increased every 4 weeks as directed by your prescriber, up to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly.
How to inject: Use a new pen for each injection. Do not share your pen with anyone else. Inject on the same day each week. If you miss a dose and your next scheduled dose is more than 2 days away, inject as soon as possible. If it is less than 2 days until your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your usual schedule.
Storage: Store unused pens in the refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze. Once in use, the pen can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) or in the refrigerator for up to 6 weeks. Keep out of direct sunlight. Keep out of the reach of children.
Disposal: Dispose of used needles and pens safely in a sharps container. Do not put in general household waste.
Always follow the instructions provided in the patient information leaflet included with your medication and any guidance from your prescriber or pharmacist.
Do not use Wegovy if you:
Are allergic to semaglutide or any other ingredient in Wegovy. Have or have had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant — stop Wegovy at least 2 months before attempting to conceive.
Pancreatitis:
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience severe, persistent abdominal pain that radiates to the back, with or without nausea and vomiting. This may indicate acute pancreatitis. If pancreatitis is confirmed, Wegovy must be permanently discontinued. Do not restart if you have a history of pancreatitis without consulting your prescriber.
Gallbladder problems:
Wegovy may increase the risk of gallstones and gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis). Seek medical attention if you develop sudden or severe upper right abdominal pain, fever, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Heart rate:
Wegovy may increase resting heart rate. Inform your prescriber if you notice a sustained increase in heart rate or experience palpitations.
Kidney problems:
Dehydration caused by nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea may lead to acute kidney injury. Ensure adequate fluid intake and seek prompt medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down.
Diabetic retinopathy:
Rapid improvements in blood glucose control may be associated with a temporary worsening of diabetic retinopathy in people with type 2 diabetes. Patients with a history of diabetic retinopathy require careful ophthalmological monitoring.
Suicidal ideation and mood changes:
Cases of suicidal ideation and behaviour have been reported in patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonists including semaglutide. The causal relationship has not been established. However, patients with a history of depression or suicidal ideation should be monitored closely. If you experience depression, mood changes, or thoughts of self-harm, contact your prescriber or seek urgent help immediately.
Contraceptive warning:
Wegovy slows gastric emptying, which may reduce the absorption of oral medicines including the contraceptive pill. Women using oral contraceptives should switch to or add a non-oral contraceptive method, or use a barrier method (such as condoms), particularly during the first 4 weeks of each new dose level.
Driving and operating machinery:
Wegovy alone does not cause hypoglycaemia and is unlikely to affect your ability to drive. However, if used alongside other glucose-lowering medicines, the risk of low blood sugar increases. Take appropriate precautions when driving or operating machinery.
Side effects:
Very common (affecting more than 1 in 10 people): nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, dizziness, abdominal distension.
Common (affecting up to 1 in 10 people): gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), dyspepsia (indigestion), flatulence, belching, injection site reactions (bruising, pain, redness, swelling), low blood sugar (when used with other glucose-lowering medicines), increased heart rate, hair loss (alopecia).
Uncommon (affecting up to 1 in 100 people): acute pancreatitis, acute gallbladder disease (cholecystitis, cholelithiasis), syncope (fainting).
If you experience any side effects not listed above, or if any side effects become severe or persistent, contact your prescriber or seek medical attention. You can also report side effects directly to the MHRA via the Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.
