Terbinafine 1% cream is an antifungal treatment applied to the skin. It treats athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm of the body.
Terbinafine belongs to a group of medicines called allylamines. Rather than simply slowing the fungus down, it kills it outright by blocking an enzyme the fungal cell needs to build its membrane. This is why courses are short compared with older antifungal creams.
For athlete's foot between the toes, treatment usually lasts one week. Infection on the sole or side of the foot, sometimes called moccasin type, may need two weeks.
If you are being treated for a fungal nail infection, clearing athlete's foot at the same time is worth doing. The two are usually caused by the same organism, and skin infection left untreated is one of the more common reasons a nail becomes reinfected once a course of nail treatment finishes.

Wash and thoroughly dry the affected area before each application, paying particular attention to the skin between the toes.
Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin and to a small area of healthy skin around it, as the fungus often extends slightly beyond the visible rash.
For athlete's foot between the toes, apply once or twice daily for one week. For infection on the sole or sides of the foot, apply twice daily for two weeks. Jock itch and ringworm of the body usually need one to two weeks.
Wash your hands after applying, unless your hands are the area being treated.
Complete the full course even once the itching and redness have settled. Symptoms usually improve within a few days, but stopping early is the main reason athlete's foot returns.
If there is no improvement after two weeks, speak to a clinician rather than continuing.
No. The cream cannot penetrate the nail plate, so it will not clear an infected nail. Nail infections need either a medicated lacquer for mild cases, or oral tablets where more of the nail is involved. The cream is still worth using alongside nail treatment if you also have athlete's foot.
Itching and redness usually start improving within a few days. The course still needs completing in full — one week for infection between the toes, two weeks for the sole or sides of the foot — because the fungus persists in the skin after symptoms settle.
They are usually caused by the same fungus, and the skin acts as a reservoir. Clearing a nail infection over nine to twelve months only for the fungus to spread back from untreated skin is a common and avoidable outcome.
Same active ingredient, very different treatment. The cream works only where you apply it and is used for short courses on the skin. The tablets work throughout the body, run for three to four months, and require liver function monitoring. Tablets are for nail infection; the cream is for skin.
Dry thoroughly between the toes after washing, change socks daily, alternate your shoes so they dry out fully between wears, and wear flip-flops in communal changing rooms and pool areas. Treating the inside of your shoes with an antifungal powder or spray also helps.
