Belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids. It is effective at preventing rhinitis caused by seasonal allergies, works by reducing inflammation, swelling and irritation in your nose.
Beconase is a corticosteroid nasal spray containing 50 micrograms of beclometasone dipropionate per spray. It's used to prevent and treat the nasal symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and year-round allergies such as pet and dust mite allergies (perennial allergic rhinitis). It works by reducing inflammation in the lining of the nasal passages, helping to relieve a blocked, runny, or itchy nose and sneezing. Beconase is suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over, making it one of the more widely suitable corticosteroid nasal sprays available. A consultation with one of our clinicians at Access Doctor is required before it can be issued.
Beconase is not a fast-acting spray and needs to be used regularly before the full benefit is felt. Most people start to notice an improvement within a few days of starting treatment, though for some it may take up to 2 weeks of consistent daily use to experience the full effect. For hay fever sufferers, it's best to start using Beconase 2 to 3 weeks before your usual hay fever season begins, so it is already working effectively by the time pollen levels rise. Keep using it regularly even if your symptoms seem under control.
The usual starting dose for adults and children aged 6 and over is two sprays into each nostril, twice a day — once in the morning and once in the evening. Once your symptoms are well controlled, this may be reduced to one spray into each nostril twice daily. Always shake the bottle before use. Before using for the first time, prime the pump by pressing it a few times until a fine mist appears. Blow your nose gently beforehand, tilt your head slightly forward, and direct the nozzle away from the middle of your nose to avoid irritating the nasal septum. Do not blow your nose immediately after using the spray.
Beconase should not be used continuously for longer than 3 months without medical review. It is designed for seasonal use during allergy season, or for short to medium-term management of year-round allergies under medical supervision. If your symptoms are not improving after a few weeks of regular use, or if they return after stopping, speak to your GP or one of our clinicians at Access Doctor for further advice. Always use the lowest effective dose once your symptoms are under control.
Beconase is generally well tolerated and side effects are usually mild. The most commonly reported ones include nasal irritation, sneezing, a dry or sore nose or throat, and an unpleasant taste or smell. Nosebleeds can also occasionally occur. In rare cases, some people experience blurred vision after using the spray — if this happens, do not drive or operate machinery until it clears, and speak to your doctor if it persists. A very small number of people may experience an allergic reaction to Beconase, with symptoms such as wheezing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe breathing difficulties. If this happens, stop using the spray immediately and seek urgent medical attention.
Beconase should not be used by anyone who is allergic to beclometasone dipropionate or any of its other ingredients. It should also be avoided if you have an active nasal or sinus infection that has not been treated, or if you have recently had nasal surgery or a nasal injury. As with all corticosteroid nasal sprays, caution is advised if you are already taking other steroid medications, as the combined effect can increase the risk of side effects. Always let your doctor know about all the medicines you are currently taking before starting Beconase.
Beconase should be avoided during pregnancy unless your doctor considers it essential, as a precaution. While the amount of beclometasone absorbed into the bloodstream from a nasal spray is very low, there is a theoretical risk to the developing baby at high doses. If you are breastfeeding, the risk from nasal spray doses is considered low, but it is still advisable to speak to your doctor before using Beconase so they can advise on the safest option for you. Never start or stop any medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding without first consulting your GP.
