Benadryl Allergy Tablets are fast-acting antihistamines that help with allergic reactions like sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, itchy eyes, and hives. The active ingredient is acrivastine, and stops histamine, which is responsible for allergic reactions in the body. This helps ease pain and discomfort. As long as they follow the directions, adults and kids over the age shown on the packaging can safely take these tablets. Benadryl is a non-drowsy antihistamine, and can be used every 8-hourly, throughout the day to relieve all symptoms of hayfever and allergies. Always take the right amount, and if your symptoms don't go away, talk to a doctor.

Benadryl Allergy Relief is a fast-acting antihistamine capsule containing 8mg of acrivastine. It's used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever, pet and dust allergies, hives (urticaria), and other allergic conditions. It works by blocking histamine — the chemical your body produces when it reacts to an allergen — helping to reduce symptoms like sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, watery eyes, and itchy skin. It's worth noting that in the UK, different Benadryl products contain different active ingredients — Benadryl Allergy Relief specifically contains acrivastine, while some other Benadryl products contain cetirizine. Always check the label before purchasing.
One of the key advantages of Benadryl Allergy Relief is how quickly it gets to work. It starts to relieve allergy symptoms within 15 minutes of taking it, with full relief from hay fever symptoms usually felt within an hour. Its effects last for up to 8 hours, and it can be taken up to three times a day as needed — making it a great option for fast, on-the-spot allergy relief rather than a once-daily preventative tablet.
The recommended dose for adults and children aged 12 and over is one 8mg capsule, taken as needed, up to three times a day. You can take it with or without food, and it should be swallowed with a glass of water. Because it works quickly and lasts up to 8 hours, many people take it only when their symptoms flare up rather than every day. If you miss a dose, simply take the next one when it's due — never take two capsules at once to make up for a missed one. Benadryl Allergy Relief is not recommended for people aged 65 or over, as there is limited research on its safety in this age group.
Benadryl Allergy Relief is classed as a low-drowsiness antihistamine, but it can still cause sleepiness in some people. It is less sedating than older antihistamines like Piriton, but more likely to cause drowsiness than some other modern options such as fexofenadine (Allevia). Until you know how it affects you personally, be cautious about driving or operating machinery after taking it. You should also avoid drinking alcohol while taking Benadryl Allergy Relief, as alcohol can increase the risk of drowsiness and other side effects.
Most people take Benadryl Allergy Relief without any problems. The most commonly reported side effects are feeling sleepy or tired, a dry mouth, and dizziness. These are usually mild — if you experience a dry mouth, chewing sugar-free gum or sucking sugar-free sweets can help. In rare cases, a serious allergic reaction can occur, with signs including swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. If this happens, stop taking the capsules immediately and call 999 or go to your nearest A&E.
Benadryl Allergy Relief is not suitable for everyone. It should not be taken by anyone aged 65 or over, children under 12, or people with severe kidney problems. You should also avoid it if you have previously had an allergic reaction to acrivastine or a similar antihistamine called triprolidine. If you take any medicines that cause drowsiness — such as sedatives, tranquilisers, or sleeping tablets — speak to your doctor before taking Benadryl Allergy Relief, as combining them can significantly increase sedation.
Benadryl Allergy Relief is not normally recommended during pregnancy. If you are pregnant and suffering from allergy symptoms, a different antihistamine such as loratadine is usually preferred as there is more information available on its safety in pregnancy. There is also no information available on whether acrivastine passes into breast milk, so it is best avoided while breastfeeding. Always speak to your GP before taking any antihistamine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
