Desloratadine is a modern, non-drowsy antihistamine tablet used to relieve the symptoms of allergies. It is the active ingredient in branded products such as Neoclarityn, and is closely related to loratadine — in fact, desloratadine is what loratadine is converted into by your body, making it a more potent and longer-lasting version. It's used to treat hay fever, allergic rhinitis (a blocked or runny nose caused by an allergy), hives (urticaria), and itchy skin. It works by blocking histamine — the chemical your body releases during an allergic reaction — helping to ease symptoms such as sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, watery eyes, and itchy skin. It's available as a prescription medicine and can be ordered conveniently through Access Doctor following a short online consultation.
The recommended dose for adults and teenagers aged 12 and over is one 5mg tablet once a day. You can take it with or without food, and it should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Try to take it at the same time each day to keep it working consistently throughout the day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember — but if it's nearly time for your next dose, simply skip the missed one and carry on as normal. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
No — desloratadine is specifically designed not to cause drowsiness. Because it doesn't readily cross into the brain from the bloodstream, it's much less likely to cause the sedation associated with older antihistamines like Piriton. Most people can take it and carry on with their normal daily activities, including driving, without any issues. That said, a small number of people may still feel mildly drowsy, so it's worth checking how it affects you personally the first time you take it. Alcohol may also increase the risk of drowsiness, so drink in moderation while taking desloratadine.
Desloratadine is very well tolerated and the majority of people experience no side effects at all. The most commonly reported ones are headache, fatigue, and dry mouth — all of which are mild and often settle quickly. In very rare cases, a serious allergic reaction can occur. Signs to watch out for include swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking desloratadine immediately and call 999 or go to your nearest A&E
This depends on the nature of your allergy. If your symptoms only occur occasionally — for example, during hay fever season or when exposed to a particular allergen — you can take desloratadine just when needed and stop once your symptoms have cleared up. If your allergy is more persistent and affects you most days of the week or for more than four weeks at a time, your doctor may recommend taking it on an ongoing basis. Your prescribing clinician at Access Doctor will advise you on the most appropriate treatment plan for your individual situation.
Desloratadine has no known significant interactions with most common medications. In clinical studies, no clinically relevant changes were seen even when taken alongside certain antibiotics or antifungals. However, it's always a good idea to let your doctor or pharmacist know about all the medicines, vitamins, and supplements you are taking before starting desloratadine, to make sure it is safe for you. Avoid combining it with alcohol, as this may increase the risk of side effects in some people.
As a general precaution, desloratadine is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, even though a large body of data in pregnant women has not shown it to cause harm to an unborn baby. Desloratadine is known to pass into breast milk, so it should be avoided while breastfeeding unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise. If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or currently breastfeeding and need relief from allergy symptoms, always speak to your GP first — they can advise on the safest antihistamine option for your circumstances.
