Dovobet gel contains two active ingredients: calcipotriol (50 micrograms per gram), a vitamin D analogue, and betamethasone (0.5 mg per gram, as dipropionate), a potent corticosteroid. It is licensed in the UK for the topical treatment of scalp psoriasis in adults, and of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis on other areas of the body in adults.
We supply Dovobet gel in a 60g bottle. It is a prescription-only medicine, so your online consultation is reviewed by a UK-registered prescriber, who confirms whether it is suitable for you and how to use it.
Shake the bottle and apply the gel to the affected areas once a day. The usual treatment period is 4 weeks for the scalp and 8 weeks for other areas. Do not use more than 15 g a day of products containing calcipotriol, or treat more than 30% of your body.
Do not use Dovobet gel if you have erythrodermic, exfoliative or pustular psoriasis, or a known disorder of calcium metabolism. It should not be applied directly to the face or eyes, or used on the genitals.
Prefer a foam? Enstilar foam contains the same two active ingredients, calcipotriol and betamethasone dipropionate.

The most common side effect is itching. Uncommon side effects include worsening of psoriasis, a burning feeling, skin irritation, redness, rash, dry skin, acne, eye irritation, inflamed hair follicles and skin infection. Rarely, it can cause stretch marks or peeling skin. White or grey hair may temporarily turn yellowish where the gel is applied on the scalp. There may be a risk of pustular psoriasis or a flare-up when treatment is stopped, and using more than the recommended amount can raise the level of calcium in your blood. Tell your prescriber if you notice blurred vision.
Do not use Dovobet gel if you are allergic to calcipotriol, betamethasone or any of the ingredients; if you have erythrodermic, exfoliative or pustular psoriasis; or if you have a known disorder of calcium metabolism. Do not use it on skin affected by viral, fungal, bacterial or parasitic infections, rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis, thin or fragile skin, stretch marks, ulcers or wounds, or on the face or genitals. Tell the clinician if you have severe kidney or liver disease. Access Doctor does not prescribe for anyone under 18 or for pregnant patients.
Shake the bottle, then apply the gel to the affected areas once a day. Leave it on the skin overnight or during the day; for the best effect, do not shower, bathe or wash your hair straight after applying it. Wash your hands after use. Do not cover treated skin with a dressing, and do not use other steroid products on the same area.
Do not use more than 15 g a day of products containing calcipotriol, and do not treat more than 30% of your body. For the scalp, between 1 g and 4 g a day (up to about one teaspoon) is usually enough. Using more than recommended can raise the level of calcium in your blood.
The recommended treatment period is 4 weeks for the scalp and 8 weeks for other areas of the body. If you need to continue or restart treatment after this, it should only be after a medical review.
While using Dovobet gel, limit or avoid excessive exposure to natural sunlight and sunbeds. Speak to your prescriber before having any light treatment for psoriasis.
