What is Eumovate Cream?

Eumovate Cream is a prescription medicine that contains clobetasone butyrate.

Clobetasone is a corticosteroid that is applied topically to relieve skin inflammation and itching and is used to treat a number of conditions including:

  • Atopic eczema
  • Allergic contact dermatitis
  • Irritant contact dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Thick skin rash due to excessive scratching to relieve itching
  • An eruption of hard nodules on the skin with intense itching
  • Discoid lupus erythematosus
  • Erythroderma is characterized by intense and widespread reddening of the skin
  • Severe reactions to insect stings and bites

How does it work?

Eumovate works directly on the skin cells to reduce the release of chemicals that cause inflammation. This results in the reduction of swelling, itching, and redness, which help prevent scratching that can further irritate the skin.

How to use Eumovate Cream

Eumovate cream is used for weeping and moist surfaces. Eumovate ointment is used for scaly, dry, lichenified lesions.

Eumovate cream & ointment should be applied evenly and thinly to the affected areas of the skin once or twice a day when you start your treatment course. As the active ingredient in Eumovate is a steroid-based medication, if it is applied to the skin in excessive amounts, or over a prolonged period of time, it may cause the layers of the skin to become thin and likely to cause cracking and bleeding. Therefore Eumovate should be used less frequently as soon as the condition begins to improve, or as directed by your doctor.

Do not apply Eumovate Cream to infected or broken areas of the skin, unless you are also treating the infection. Don’t apply Eumovate to the facial skin unless your doctor instructs you. Do not apply Eumovate around the eyes or eyelids.

Side effects & precautions

Side effects are generally not too common with steroid creams unless it is applied too liberally or used over a long period of time over a large area of skin.

The most common side effect is a feeling of pain, itching, irritation, or burning in the affected area.

If your skin worsens or changes (e.g lighter or darker, hair loss) when using Eumovate, stop using it immediately and speak to your doctor. See section 4 of the patient information leaflet for further information on serious side effects.
