A topical nasal cream used to reduce Staphylococcus aureus bacteria living in the nose ("nasal decolonisation"). Naseptin is used as an alternative to mupirocin nasal ointment — for example ahead of planned surgery, for recurrent skin or nasal infections, or as part of a household MRSA clearance plan. It is not used to treat an active, spreading nasal infection on its own.

Naseptin combines two antimicrobial ingredients, chlorhexidine hydrochloride and neomycin sulfate, in a cream base. Applied inside the nostrils, it works on the surface of the skin to reduce the number of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (including MRSA strains) that can live harmlessly in the nose but may spread to cause infection or be passed to others. It is a decolonisation treatment rather than a treatment for an active, spreading infection.

Naseptin contains peanut (arachis) oil, so it should not be used by anyone with a peanut or soya allergy. It's also not suitable if you're allergic to chlorhexidine, neomycin or related antibiotics.
