Regaine for Men is a clinically proven topical treatment that helps men with male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) slow down hair loss and encourage hair regrowth. Minoxidil, the drug's active ingredient, works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles and lengthening the hair growth phase. This helps to make hair denser over time. Many men see their hair get thicker and cover more of their head after using it regularly. Regaine is best applied directly on the scalp once or twice a day. It works best when you start using it as soon as you notice your hair is thinning. Results are different for each person, and you need to keep using it to keep getting the benefits. If you stop using it, any hair that has grown back may slowly fall out. Always read the directions on the product and talk to a doctor if you have any questions or if you feel irritated.

Regaine for Men is a clinically proven topical treatment containing 5% minoxidil, used to treat hereditary male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It is available as both a foam and a solution and is applied directly to the scalp. Although the exact mechanism isn't fully understood, minoxidil works by widening the small blood vessels in the scalp, increasing blood flow to the hair follicles and delivering more oxygen and nutrients. This helps to prolong the hair's natural growth phase and encourages thinning follicles to produce thicker, stronger hair.
Regaine requires consistent, long-term use before results become visible. In the first 1 to 3 weeks of use, some men experience a temporary increase in hair shedding — this is a normal part of the process as hair follicles shift into the growth phase, and is not a sign the treatment isn't working. New soft hair growth may begin to appear within 2 to 4 months, with thicker, more visible regrowth typically seen between 4 and 6 months. In clinical studies, 9 out of 10 men using Regaine for Men foam twice daily reported improved hair growth after just 16 weeks. Results vary between individuals and Regaine works best when used in the early stages of hair loss — it is less effective once significant hair loss has already occurred.
Regaine for Men should be applied to a dry scalp twice a day — once in the morning and once in the evening. For the foam, apply half a capful directly to the affected area of the scalp and massage in gently with your fingertips. For the solution, use the applicator provided to apply 1ml to the centre of the affected area. Wash your hands thoroughly after each application. Do not shampoo your hair for at least 4 hours after applying. Apply only to the scalp — avoid contact with the eyes, forehead, or other areas of the body. Do not use more than the recommended amount, as this will not improve results and may increase the risk of side effects.
This is one of the most important things to understand about Regaine — it is a long-term treatment, not a cure. If you stop using it, any hair you have retained or regrown will gradually be lost again, usually within 3 to 6 months of stopping. To maintain the benefit, Regaine needs to be used continuously and indefinitely. If you are considering stopping, speak to your clinician at Access Doctor first, as they can advise on alternative or complementary treatments to help maintain your results.
Most men tolerate Regaine well and experience no significant side effects. The most commonly reported ones are mild scalp irritation, redness, dryness, itching, or flaking at the application site — these affect around 1 in 10 users and usually settle with continued use. If you find the solution formulation irritating, switching to the foam — which does not contain propylene glycol — may help. In rare cases, some of the minoxidil can be absorbed into the bloodstream, causing systemic effects such as a faster heartbeat, palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, or unexpected weight gain. If you experience any of these, stop using Regaine immediately and seek medical advice promptly. A severe allergic reaction is very rare but possible — signs include significant swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing. If this happens, call 999 immediately.
Yes — Regaine and finasteride are often used together and work very well as a combination treatment. They tackle hair loss through entirely different mechanisms — Regaine stimulates the hair follicles directly at scalp level, while finasteride reduces the DHT hormone that causes follicle shrinkage in the first place. Many men who use both treatments together find the results significantly better than using either one alone. Your clinician at Access Doctor can advise whether a combination approach is right for you.
Both the Regaine for Men foam and solution contain the same 5% minoxidil and are clinically proven to be equally effective. The choice largely comes down to personal preference. The foam tends to be easier to apply, dries faster, and is less likely to drip or run — making it popular for everyday use. The solution can be easier to apply precisely to smaller or targeted areas and may be preferable if you have longer hair. The solution contains propylene glycol, which can occasionally cause scalp irritation — if you experience this, switching to the foam is advisable.
Regaine for Men is specifically designed and licensed for hereditary male pattern baldness — thinning at the crown and mid-scalp. It is not designed to treat hair loss caused by other conditions such as alopecia areata, hair loss following illness or medication, or traction alopecia. It is also not intended to treat a receding hairline. If you are unsure whether your hair loss is hereditary in nature, or if your hair loss has been sudden or patchy, speak to your GP before starting Regaine — they can help identify the underlying cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
