What is Uniroid HC Ointment?

Uniroid is an ointment that is used to bring short-term relief of symptoms associated with piles. Piles (haemorrhoids) are swelling that can occur around the back passage. Small blood vessels around the anus fill with more blood than usual and then form into small swellings. The more common symptom is bleeding after going to the toilet, larger haemorrhoids can cause pain, irritations and itching.

Uniroid contains a steroid cream (hydrocortisone) which reduce inflammation, and this helps to ease itching and pain. This also contains a local anaesthetic (Cinchocaine hydrochloride) which helps with the pain. Uniroid should only be used for short-term use only.

Important information before using the medicine.

Speak to your doctor if you:

  • Are allergic to cinchocaine hydrochloride, hydrocortisone or any of the other ingredients of Uniroid. a rash, swallowing or breathing problems, swelling of your lips, face, throat or tongue.
  • Have a skin infection.
  • Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or you are breastfeeding.
  • Taking other medicines, such as codeine, might be making you constipated. Being constipated means you are more likely to get piles.
  • Experience blurred vision or any other visual disturbances.

How to use Uniroid HC Ointment

Always use the ointment exactly as instructed by your doctor and the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet from inside the pack.

It should only be applied externally to the rectum once in the morning, once at night and after every bowel movement. Furthermore, the treatment should only be used for up to seven days, you should speak to your doctor if symptoms persist.

Using the ointment:

  • Wash your hands.
  • Squeeze a small amount of the ointment onto your fingertip.
  • Gently rub a small layer of ointment over the sore, painful or itching area.
  • Wash your hands.

If you forget to use Uniroid ointment

If you forget to use your ointment, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not use a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Side effects & precautions

Like all medicines, Uniroid treatment for piles can cause side effects although these are rare. Some patients find that they suffer from itching, pain or a rash that might develop around the back passage. If you suffer badly from this or have other problems that you think your medicine may be causing, tell your doctor or pharmacist.

If you have used this ointment for a long time, it is possible that you could get something called ‘adrenal suppression. Signs include:

  • Lack of appetite
  • Pain in the stomach
  • Weight loss
  • Feeling sick or being sick
  • Lack of concentration
  • A feeling of hunger
  • Nervousness and fits

How should you store your medicine?

Keep this medicine in a safe place where children cannot see or reach it.

Do not use Uniroid ointment after the expiry date which is stated on the label, carton or tube after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

Store below 25°C.
