Minoxidil (Regaine) for Men: How to Use It and What to Expect
A clinician-reviewed guide to topical minoxidil — how it works, how to apply it correctly, the results timeline, and why it works best alongside finasteride.
Part of the Male Hair Loss Health Guide.
Key fact: Minoxidil (Regaine) is a topical treatment applied to the scalp twice daily. It works at the follicle — improving blood flow and extending the growth phase — rather than on hormones, which makes it the natural partner to finasteride rather than a competitor.

Minoxidil is a topical hair loss treatment, sold in the UK under the brand name Regaine and available as a generic. It comes as a 5% solution or foam for men and is applied directly to the scalp. It was originally developed as a blood pressure tablet; researchers noticed increased hair growth as a side effect, and it became one of the first treatments licensed for male pattern hair loss. Unlike finasteride, minoxidil is available over the counter — no prescription is required.

How minoxidil works
Minoxidil is a vasodilator — it widens the small blood vessels around hair follicles, improving the supply of blood, oxygen and nutrients to them. It also appears to shorten the resting phase of the hair cycle and prolong the active growth (anagen) phase, so follicles spend more time producing hair. The result is that miniaturised follicles can be nudged back towards producing thicker, longer, more pigmented hairs.
Crucially, minoxidil does not affect DHT, the hormone behind male pattern baldness. That is why it does not tackle the root cause the way finasteride does — but also why the two combine so well.
How to apply minoxidil correctly
Technique and consistency are what make minoxidil work. Apply it twice a day to a dry scalp:
1
Start with a dry scalp
Make sure your hair and scalp are dry. Applying to wet hair dilutes the minoxidil and reduces how much reaches the follicles.
2
Measure the dose
Use 1ml of solution (via the dropper) or half a capful of foam — enough to cover the thinning area. More does not work faster.
3
Spread over the affected area
Apply directly to the scalp, not the hair, and spread gently with your fingertips across the thinning or receding areas.
4
Wash your hands
Wash thoroughly afterwards so it does not transfer to your face, where it can cause unwanted hair growth.
5
Let it dry
Allow at least 2–4 hours (ideally before bed for the evening dose) before washing hair, styling or lying down.
6
Twice daily, every day
Consistency is everything. Missing applications undermines results — build it into your morning and evening routine.
Results: what to expect and when
Like finasteride, minoxidil takes months, not weeks, and an early increase in shedding is normal as the hair cycle resets.
| Timeframe | What to expect |
|---|---|
| 0–8 weeks | A temporary increase in shedding can occur as resting hairs are pushed out ahead of new growth. This is expected. |
| 4–6 months | Most men notice reduced shedding and the first signs of finer regrowth. |
| 6–12 months | Visible regrowth, where it occurs, becomes clearer — often most noticeable at the crown. |
| 12+ months | Maintenance of gains with continued twice-daily use. |
Give it at least four months before deciding whether it is working, and do not be alarmed by early shedding — it is a sign the hair cycle is resetting, not that the treatment is failing.
Foam vs solution
Regaine comes in two 5% formats. Both contain the same amount of minoxidil; the choice is about tolerability and convenience:
Solution
Applied with a dropper. Contains propylene glycol, which helps absorption but can cause more scalp irritation or dryness in some men.
Foam
Propylene-glycol-free, dries faster and is often better tolerated. Many men find it easier to apply without dripping.
Minoxidil with finasteride
Minoxidil and finasteride are the two pillars of non-surgical hair loss treatment, and they are most effective together — finasteride removes the hormonal driver of loss while minoxidil stimulates the follicles directly. Studies consistently show the combination outperforms either treatment alone.
| Minoxidil | Finasteride | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Stimulates follicles topically | Reduces DHT systemically |
| Form | Solution or foam, twice daily | 1mg tablet, once daily |
| Prescription? | No — over the counter | Yes |
| Best used | Best combined with finasteride | Alone or combined |
See our finasteride guide for the oral half of the combination, or the complete treatment guide for how both fit alongside transplants and other options.
Side effects and safety
Minoxidil is generally well tolerated. The most common issues are local:
- Scalp irritation, dryness or itching — often from the propylene glycol in the solution; switching to foam usually helps
- Unwanted facial hair — if it spreads beyond the scalp, so wash hands after applying and avoid transfer
- Temporary increased shedding — in the first weeks, as described above
Stop and seek medical advice if you develop chest pain, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, sudden unexplained weight gain, or swelling of the hands or feet. These are rare but require prompt assessment. In an emergency, call 999.

What is minoxidil and how does it work?
Minoxidil, sold in the UK as Regaine, is a topical treatment for hair loss applied directly to the scalp. It widens blood vessels around the follicles, improving blood flow and prolonging the hair growth phase, which encourages thinning follicles to produce thicker, longer hairs. Unlike finasteride, it does not affect DHT.
How do I apply minoxidil?
Apply minoxidil to a dry scalp twice a day — 1ml of solution or half a capful of foam — spread over the affected area and massaged in gently. Wash your hands afterwards and let it dry before styling or lying down. Consistency is essential; it must be used twice daily to work.
How long does minoxidil take to work?
Most men notice reduced shedding within 4 to 6 months and visible regrowth, where it occurs, between 6 and 12 months of twice-daily use. An initial temporary increase in shedding in the first few weeks is normal as the hair cycle resets. Give it at least four months before judging results.
Can I use minoxidil and finasteride together?
Yes — combining topical minoxidil with oral finasteride is the most effective non-surgical approach to male pattern hair loss. They work through different mechanisms: finasteride lowers DHT systemically while minoxidil stimulates follicles at the scalp. Their effects are complementary and better together than either alone.
What happens if I stop using minoxidil?
Minoxidil only works while you use it. If you stop, any hair maintained or regrown is gradually lost over the following months, and the scalp returns to where it would have been without treatment. It needs to be used consistently long-term to sustain results.
Does minoxidil have side effects?
Minoxidil is generally well tolerated. The most common effects are scalp irritation, dryness or itching, usually from the solution's alcohol content — the foam is often better tolerated. Unwanted facial hair growth can occur if it spreads beyond the scalp. Stop and seek advice if you get chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, dizziness or sudden swelling.
