Bactroban Nasal Ointment (Mupirocin)

Bactroban (mupirocin) is a topical antibacterial nasal ointment used in two situations: as a first-line treatment for a localised bacterial infection at the entrance of the nostril (nasal vestibulitis/folliculitis), and as a first-line agent for staphylococcal nasal decolonisation, reducing Staphylococcus aureus bacteria living in the nose.

For a localised nasal infection, apply a small amount inside the affected nostril twice daily for 5 days (up to 7 days if needed), using a clean fingertip or cotton bud, and wash your hands before and after application. For nasal decolonisation, apply a small amount to the inner surface of each nostril twice daily for 5 days.

Treatment should not be used for longer than 7 days, as prolonged or repeated use increases the risk of antimicrobial resistance with mupirocin. Seek review if the condition is not settling or gets worse.

Bactroban is for external/nasal use only. Rare hypersensitivity reactions can occur - stop use and seek medical advice if you notice irritation, swelling, or a rash. Avoid squeezing or picking at a nasal boil while using this treatment.

It is intended for adults assessed under Access Doctor's Nasal Infections policy, for either a localised nasal infection or staphylococcal decolonisation where clinically indicated - such as recurrent infections, a pre-operative decolonisation instruction, or household MRSA contact. Repeat decolonisation courses within 3 months of a previous course should not be supplied without GP or specialist input.
