Loceryl is a medicated nail lacquer containing amorolfine 5%. It is painted onto the affected nail like a clear nail varnish and left in place, releasing antifungal medicine into the nail plate over the following days.
Amorolfine works by disrupting ergosterol, a substance fungal cells need to build their membranes. Without it the fungus cannot grow or repair itself.
Because the lacquer forms a reservoir within the nail, it keeps working between applications, which is why it only needs applying once a week rather than daily.
Loceryl contains the same active ingredient as Curanail and generic amorolfine lacquer. Loceryl is the original brand.

Apply once a week, on the same day each week.
First, file the infected area of the nail down as far as comfortably possible using one of the disposable files supplied. Use these files only on infected nails, and never on healthy ones, to avoid spreading the infection.
Clean and degrease the nail surface with one of the alcohol swabs provided.
Using one of the reusable applicators, apply the lacquer evenly across the whole nail surface and let it dry for around three minutes.
Clean the applicator with the same swab afterwards and replace the cap tightly, as the lacquer dries out quickly if left open.
Before the next weekly application, remove the old lacquer with an alcohol swab and file the nail again.
Keep going for the full course. Stopping as soon as the nail looks better is the most common reason the infection comes back.
Both contain amorolfine 5%, so the active ingredient is identical. Loceryl is the original brand; Curanail and generic amorolfine lacquer are alternatives with the same medicine. Your prescriber can advise which is most appropriate.
The lacquer stops the fungus spreading, but the damaged part of the nail cannot be repaired — it has to grow out. Expect around 6 months for a fingernail and 9 to 12 months for a toenail. The sign it is working is clear, healthy nail appearing at the base.
No. Cosmetic varnish and false nails prevent the lacquer reaching the nail and trap moisture underneath, which encourages the fungus. Nails need to stay bare for the whole course.
Apply it as soon as you remember, then continue on your usual weekly schedule. Missing the occasional application will not undo your progress, but repeated gaps will slow treatment down.
When more than two nails are affected, when most of the nail is involved, or when the infection reaches the base of the nail near the cuticle. Lacquer cannot penetrate that far, and oral antifungal treatment is usually needed instead.
