Anthisan Cream is an antihistamine cream containing mepyramine maleate, used to relieve the itching, redness and swelling caused by insect bites and stings as well as nettle stings. When an insect bites, your body releases histamine, the chemical responsible for the familiar itchy, inflamed bump. Anthisan works by blocking the action of histamine in the skin, which calms the local reaction and eases the urge to scratch. It is applied directly to the affected area and is a popular over-the-counter choice in the UK for the discomfort of bites and stings. Anthisan is best used on intact skin and is not suitable for broken or weeping skin or for large areas. Our prescribers will confirm during your free online consultation whether it is right for you and advise on how to use it safely.

Anthisan Cream is best for insect bites, stings and nettle stings that are itchy and a little swollen, where the skin is unbroken. Wash and dry the area first, then apply a small amount of cream to the bite and rub it in gently. You can apply it two to three times a day, and most people use it for no more than three days. Do not use it on broken, blistered or weeping skin, on large areas of the body, or for long periods, as antihistamine creams can occasionally cause skin sensitivity with extended use. Avoid exposing treated skin to strong sunlight. If the bite is spreading, becoming more painful, developing pus, or you feel unwell, this may be a sign of infection rather than simple irritation, and Anthisan will not treat that. Seek urgent help (call 999) if you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, mouth or throat, or feel faint after a sting, as these can indicate a serious allergic reaction.
Yes. Anthisan is an antihistamine cream widely used in the UK to relieve the itching and swelling of insect bites, stings and nettle stings. It works best on bites where the skin is unbroken and not infected. Apply a small amount two to three times a day for up to three days until the irritation settles.
Anthisan is an antihistamine cream that blocks histamine in the skin, while hydrocortisone is a mild steroid that reduces inflammation. Both can ease the itch of a bite. Antihistamine creams like Anthisan are often used for short-term relief of bites and stings, whereas hydrocortisone may be preferred for more inflamed, itchy reactions. A prescriber can advise which suits your situation.
Anthisan is usually applied two to three times a day to the affected area. It is intended for short-term use, normally for no more than three days. If your symptoms have not improved after a few days, stop using it and seek advice rather than continuing for longer.
