Betnovate cream contains betamethasone valerate 0.122% (equivalent to 0.1% betamethasone), a potent topical corticosteroid. It is licensed in the UK for psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis) and helps to calm the redness, scaling and itching of psoriasis patches.
We supply Betnovate cream in 30g and 100g tubes. It is a prescription-only medicine, so your online consultation is reviewed by a UK-registered prescriber, who confirms whether it is suitable for you and how to use it.
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin once or twice a day, for up to 4 weeks until your skin improves. Creams are especially suitable for moist or weeping areas.
Do not use Betnovate cream on untreated skin infections, rosacea, acne or perioral dermatitis, or for itching around the anus or genitals. Prolonged use on the face is not recommended.
Prefer an ointment? Betnovate Ointment contains the same amount of betamethasone and is especially suitable for dry, scaly or thickened skin.

Common side effects are itching and a burning feeling or pain where the cream is applied. Very rarely, it can cause thinning of the skin, stretch marks, visible small blood vessels, changes in skin colour or increased hair growth, and the risk is higher with long-term use, use on large areas or under a dressing. In psoriasis, rebound flare-ups and pustular psoriasis have been reported in some cases. Stopping after long-term use can cause a withdrawal reaction, with redness, burning or stinging that may spread beyond the treated area. Tell your prescriber if you notice blurred vision.
Do not use Betnovate cream if you are allergic to betamethasone or any of its ingredients, or on skin affected by untreated infections, rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis, itching without inflammation, or itching around the anus or genitals. It is not suitable for widespread plaque psoriasis. The cream contains chlorocresol, which may cause allergic reactions, and cetostearyl alcohol, which may cause local skin reactions. Access Doctor does not prescribe for anyone under 18 or for pregnant patients.
Apply a thin layer, using only enough to cover the affected patches, once or twice a day, and gently rub it in. Wash your hands afterwards unless you are treating them. Use it for up to 4 weeks until your skin improves; your prescriber may then advise using it less often or switching to a milder treatment. Do not stop suddenly after long-term use, and do not cover the treated area with a dressing unless your prescriber advises it. If you also use an emollient, allow time for the cream to absorb before applying it.
Prolonged use on the face is not recommended because the skin there is more likely to become thin. If your prescriber advises using it on your face, courses are usually limited to 5 days. Using it in skin folds increases how much steroid is absorbed, and it must not be used for itching around the genitals, so only use it on these areas if your prescriber has specifically told you to.
If your psoriasis gets worse or has not improved within 2 to 4 weeks of using Betnovate cream, speak to your prescriber, as your treatment and diagnosis may need to be reviewed.
No. Betnovate cream is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, so it must be prescribed by a qualified prescriber and dispensed by a registered pharmacy. At Access Doctor, your online consultation is reviewed by a UK prescriber, and the price includes your consultation and private prescription.
Yes. Every order is sent in plain, unbranded packaging, with nothing on the outside of the parcel that identifies the medicine inside or mentions Access Doctor.
If you also use an emollient, allow time for Betnovate cream to absorb after each application before applying the emollient. Tell the clinician about any other treatments you use so they can advise you on how to use them together.
