Clotrimazole 1% cream is an antifungal treatment for athlete's foot and other fungal skin infections, such as ringworm, jock itch and yeast infections in skin folds. It contains the same active ingredient as Canesten cream.
Clotrimazole belongs to a group of medicines called imidazole antifungals. It works by damaging the outer wall of the fungal cells so they can no longer grow, which gives the skin time to heal. Because it stops the fungus growing rather than killing it outright, the course is longer than with terbinafine, but it works well when used for the full time.
| Active ingredient | Clotrimazole 1% |
| Drug class | Imidazole antifungal |
| How to apply | Thin layer two or three times daily |
| Course length | At least 4 weeks, and 2 weeks after skin clears |
| Treats | Athlete's foot, ringworm, jock itch, fungal skin infections |
| Pack size | 20g tube |
Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly before each application, paying particular attention to the skin between the toes.
Apply a thin layer of cream two or three times a day to the affected skin and a small area of healthy skin around it, and rub in gently. A 0.5cm strip is enough to cover an area about the size of your hand.
Wash your hands afterwards so you don't spread the infection.
Keep using it for at least 4 weeks, and for 2 weeks after your symptoms have gone. If there's no improvement after 4 weeks, speak to our pharmacist or your GP.
Usually for at least 4 weeks, applied two or three times a day. Keep using it for 2 weeks after your skin looks clear, because the fungus can still be there after the symptoms settle. Stopping early is the most common reason athlete's foot comes back.
Both work well. Terbinafine kills the fungus, so the course is shorter, usually 1 to 2 weeks. Clotrimazole stops the fungus growing, so it takes longer, but it's a good option if terbinafine isn't suitable for you or you prefer a lower-cost treatment. For more detail, see our guide to athlete's foot treatments compared.
Yes, it contains the same active ingredient at the same strength, clotrimazole 1%. Canesten is a brand name; this is a lower-cost version that works in the same way.
Clotrimazole cream can usually be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but let us know in your consultation so our pharmacist can check it's right for you. If you're breastfeeding and applying it near the nipple area, wash it off before feeding.
