Difflam oral rinse is an anti-inflammatory mouthwash containing benzydamine hydrochloride, used to relieve the pain and discomfort of a sore throat, including sore throats linked to colds, flu, tonsillitis, mouth ulcers and throat irritation after dental procedures. Benzydamine works locally where you rinse and gargle, reducing inflammation and providing a numbing effect that helps ease pain when swallowing or talking. Unlike antibiotics, it does not treat the underlying infection — it relieves symptoms while your body recovers — so it can help with both viral and bacterial sore throats. It usually starts to soothe the throat within minutes and can be used every few hours as needed. A short, free online consultation lets a UK pharmacist check that Difflam is suitable for you before it is supplied by our pharmacy and delivered discreetly across the UK.

Use Difflam oral rinse exactly as directed. For adults and children aged 12 and over, the usual dose is to rinse or gargle with 15ml (about one tablespoon, or the measuring cup provided) every 1.5 to 3 hours as required. Gargle for around 20 to 30 seconds, then spit it out — do not swallow the rinse. If it stings, you can dilute it with the same amount of water before use. Do not use it for more than 7 days in a row unless a pharmacist or prescriber advises you to. Keep it away from the eyes and do not use it in children under 12 unless advised by a healthcare professional. If your sore throat lasts longer than a few days, keeps coming back, or comes with a high fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, contact your prescriber or GP.
Difflam oral rinse contains benzydamine, an anti-inflammatory medicine that relieves the pain and discomfort of a sore throat and sore mouth. It is often used for sore throats linked to colds and flu, tonsillitis, mouth ulcers, and irritation after dental treatment. It eases symptoms but does not treat the underlying infection.
Difflam usually begins to soothe the throat within a few minutes of rinsing or gargling, with the numbing and anti-inflammatory effect lasting a couple of hours. You can repeat the dose every 1.5 to 3 hours as needed. If your symptoms do not improve within a few days, speak to a pharmacist or your GP.
You should spit it out — Difflam oral rinse is for rinsing and gargling, not for swallowing. Gargle with the measured dose for around 20 to 30 seconds and then spit it out. If it stings, you can dilute it with the same amount of water before use.
Yes. Because Difflam relieves pain and inflammation rather than killing bacteria, it can help soothe both viral and bacterial sore throats. Most sore throats are viral and clear on their own, and Difflam can make you more comfortable while you recover. Antibiotics are only needed for certain bacterial infections such as strep throat.
Yes. Difflam oral rinse is a pharmacy (P) medicine, so it is supplied under the supervision of a pharmacist rather than sold freely. Through Access Doctor you complete a short, free consultation, and if it is suitable our UK pharmacy supplies it and delivers it discreetly to your door.
Do not use Difflam if you are allergic to benzydamine or any of the other ingredients. It is not generally recommended for children under 12 unless advised by a healthcare professional. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, let the pharmacist or prescriber know so they can confirm it is appropriate for you.
