- Ramadan — to fast and pray without interruption across some or all of the month.
- Hajj & Umrah — to perform rites such as tawaf during the pilgrimage window.
- Exams — to avoid cramps, fatigue or heavy bleeding clashing with important assessments.
Each is a common, valid reason. Norethisterone is used in exactly the same way regardless of the occasion.
How to Time It for a Multi-Day Event

Step-by-step: how to take norethisterone.
Fasting and Norethisterone (Ramadan)
Norethisterone is an oral tablet taken three times a day. During Ramadan, most women take doses around suhoor and iftar and once in between if the fasting window allows — the key is keeping doses roughly evenly spaced and consistent day to day. It does not need to be taken with food, though food can reduce nausea. If a strict three-times-daily schedule is hard within fasting hours, ask your prescriber for advice on spacing.
Planning for Hajj or Umrah
Pilgrimage involves heat, long days and physical exertion. Practical points:
- Pack enough — take the full pack even if you expect to use less; travel disruption is common.
- Storage — keep below 25°C, out of direct sun, in hand luggage.
- Stay hydrated and keep moving — sensible anyway in heat, and it supports circulation while on a progestogen.
More travel practicalities: period delay for holidays and events.
Exams
Start 3 days before your period is due and continue across your exam window. You can stop the day your last exam finishes; your period follows 2–3 days later. Spotting (~1 in 10 women) is normal and not a full period.
Is It Safe?
For most healthy women, yes. It's not suitable if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a history of blood clots, hormone-sensitive cancer, severe liver disease, or unexplained bleeding. See is it safe to delay your period?

Can I delay my period for the whole of Ramadan?
Norethisterone delays for up to 17 days, so it may not cover all 29 to 30 days in one course. For a longer delay, discuss the combined pill back-to-back with a prescriber.
Does taking norethisterone break a fast?
Rulings on medication and fasting vary by scholar and school; many hold that necessary oral medicine is a personal or religious question rather than a medical one. Medically, it can be taken with or without food. Seek guidance from a trusted religious authority on the observance itself.
Can I delay my period for Hajj?
Yes — this is one of the most common reasons women use norethisterone. Start 3 days before your period is due and order well ahead of travel.
Can I delay my period for exams?
Yes. Start 3 days before it's due, continue through your exams, then stop — your period returns 2 to 3 days later.
How far in advance should I order?
At least 5 to 7 days before your expected period; the absolute minimum is 3 days, but that leaves no room for delivery delay.
Whatever the occasion, Access Doctor's pharmacist independent prescribers can assess you through a short online consultation and, where appropriate, prescribe norethisterone in time, with discreet next-day delivery.
