A practical UK guide to delaying your period before a holiday, wedding or sporting event: when to order, how to time the course, flights and blood clots, storing tablets abroad, and what to do if things don’t go to plan.

When to get urgent help: Call 999 or go to A&E if you have signs of a blood clot or stroke while taking norethisterone: pain, swelling or redness in one leg; sudden chest pain or breathlessness; coughing up blood; sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or a sudden severe headache. Also call 999 for a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Stop taking it and see a doctor the same day if your skin or eyes turn yellow, you get a migraine for the first time, or you have sudden changes to your vision.
Key fact: to delay your period for a holiday, start norethisterone 5mg tablets at least 3 days before your period is due and take one three times a day until you no longer need to delay it. Delaying a period for a holiday, wedding or sporting event is one of the most common reasons people ask for norethisterone. It is suitable for most healthy women after a prescriber check, but it does need planning. This guide walks you through the timing, the travel practicalities and what to do if things don’t go to plan.

Use your last 2 to 3 cycles. If your cycle varies, use the earliest likely date.

One 5mg tablet three times a day, spread evenly through your waking day, for example 7am, 3pm and 11pm.

Take it for as long as your prescriber advises. The Primolut N licence describes courses of no longer than 10 to 14 days; NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service guidance allows up to 3 to 4 weeks if necessary.

Your period usually starts within 3 days of your last tablet, so plan for it to arrive after you get home where possible.

Long flights and blood clots
Part of each dose of norethisterone is converted in the body to a small amount of oestrogen, so the same blood clot warnings as the combined pill apply. Sitting still for a long time, such as on a long-haul flight, also raises the risk of clots. Tell your prescriber during your consultation if you are flying long haul, and on the flight:
- Get up and walk around when you can, and flex your ankles and calves while seated.
- Drink plenty of water and go easy on alcohol.
- Know the warning signs in the urgent-help box at the top of this page, and get help straight away if you notice them, including after you land.

Taking it abroad
- Storage: the leaflet says not to store the tablets above 25°C and to keep them in the original container to protect them from light. In a hot country, keep them out of direct sun, such as in a bag in your room rather than on a sunbed.
- Hand luggage: pack them in your hand luggage, in the labelled pharmacy packaging, in case your hold bag is delayed.
- Pack enough: take enough tablets to cover delays to your journey home.
- Time zones: keep your three doses spread evenly through your waking day on local time. Moving a dose by an hour or two while you adjust is unlikely to matter.
- Local rules: rules on carrying prescription medicines vary by country, so check before you travel if you are unsure.
Swimming and water activities
Norethisterone is a tablet, so swimming, water parks, sweating and water sports don’t affect how it works. There are no restrictions on physical activity while you take it.
What if things don’t go to plan?
- Your period starts before the tablets arrive: norethisterone won’t reliably stop bleeding that has already started. Contact us for advice.
- Spotting while taking the tablets: some people get light bleeding. Keep taking the tablets as prescribed, and contact your prescriber if the bleeding becomes heavy.
- You miss a dose: take it as soon as you remember, then carry on at your normal times. Don’t take a double dose.
- You run out: your period usually starts within 3 days of your last tablet, so pack enough to cover delays.

UK safety and prescribing information
- Legal status: norethisterone is a prescription-only medicine (POM). At Access Doctor it is prescribed only after an online consultation with a GPhC-registered pharmacist independent prescriber, who may decline and suggest an alternative or that you see your GP.
- Licence: it is the only progestogen licensed in the UK to delay periods (NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service). The dose is 5mg three times a day, starting 3 days before your period is due.
- Course length: take it for as long as your prescriber advises. The Primolut N licence describes courses of no longer than 10 to 14 days, and NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service guidance says it can be taken for up to 3 to 4 weeks if necessary.
- Not a contraceptive: use condoms or another method while you take it.
- Blood clots: part of each dose is converted in the body to ethinylestradiol, the oestrogen in the combined pill (about 4–6 micrograms for every 1mg, according to the Primolut N product information), so the same blood clot warnings apply. Your prescriber will check risk factors such as a previous clot, smoking, a BMI over 30, being over 35, recent surgery and long-haul travel.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: do not take it if you are or might be pregnant. The Primolut N product information says it should be avoided while breastfeeding, so ask your prescriber.
- Reporting side effects: you can report suspected side effects to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme website or the Yellow Card app.
