When to get urgent help: If you take Wegovy tablets, call 999 or go to A&E for signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. Wegovy pills — correctly called Wegovy Tablets — are a once-daily oral form of semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. Both are made by Novo Nordisk. Both are GLP-1 receptor agonists, which act on appetite, slow how quickly food leaves the stomach, and help regulate blood sugar. Semaglutide is a peptide, and peptides are normally destroyed by stomach acid before they can be absorbed. Wegovy Tablets get around this using a co-formulated absorption enhancer called SNAC, which protects the semaglutide long enough for it to pass through the stomach lining into the bloodstream. That mechanism is also the reason the tablet has such strict timing rules, which we cover below.
Not the same as Rybelsus. Rybelsus is also oral semaglutide from Novo Nordisk, but it is licensed only for type 2 diabetes and comes in 3mg, 7mg and 14mg strengths. It is not licensed for weight loss in the UK. If a seller offers you "semaglutide tablets" without naming Wegovy, check exactly what you are being sold.
How much Wegovy pills cost in the UK
There is no NHS price for Wegovy Tablets because they are not available on the NHS. Novo Nordisk has not published a UK list price for the tablet either, which means every pharmacy and online provider sets its own. That is why the figures you see quoted vary so widely.

Tablets in a standard monthly pack
The important thing to understand about budgeting for this medicine is that your monthly cost is not fixed. You start at 1.5mg and step up through 4mg, 9mg and 25mg, and higher strengths cost more. A realistic plan should assume your spend increases over the first three to four months rather than staying at the entry price.

If you and your prescriber decide to continue, you move on to the standard 30-tablet pack. If not, fewer tablets go unused.
Be clear what the 10-day pack is for. It is a smaller first supply to get used to the routine and starting dose, not a weight loss trial. Ten days at the 1.5mg starting dose is unlikely to produce meaningful weight loss — meaningful change happens over months at higher doses. Judging the medicine on what the scales say after ten days will give you the wrong answer. The same full clinical assessment applies: the shorter pack does not shorten or bypass the consultation.
Watch for: Any UK site advertising Wegovy Tablets without a consultation is not operating legally, and a price far below the market is a warning sign. Prescription-only medicines cannot be sold without a prescriber assessment. Check the pharmacy's GPhC registration number before you pay.
What makes the price go up or down
Dose strength
The single biggest factor. 25mg costs considerably more than 1.5mg, and your dose rises over time by design.
Supply length
Some providers discount three-month supplies. Only worth it once you know you tolerate the medicine.
Consultation fees

So people usually choose the tablet for its format rather than to save money. If cost is your deciding factor, the injection is currently the cheaper route to the same active ingredient. If you prefer a daily tablet to a weekly injection, the tablet may suit you better; your prescriber can talk through both.

The Wegovy pill dose schedule
Wegovy Tablets use a four-step escalation with a minimum of one month at each dose before moving up. This is not optional pacing — it is how the licence is written, and it exists to limit the nausea and gut side effects that cluster around starting treatment and each increase.

1.5mg once daily — month 1
The starting dose for everyone new to the tablet. Stomach side effects may start this month and can come back after each dose increase. You can start with a 30-tablet month or a smaller 10-day pack of 1.5mg tablets.

4mg once daily — month 2 onwards
The first step up. Only move here if you have completed a full month at 1.5mg and are tolerating it reasonably well.

9mg once daily — month 3 onwards
The dose is normally increased to the 25mg maintenance dose. If you are not tolerating a step up, your prescriber may keep you on the previous dose for longer.

25mg once daily — month 4 onwards
The full maintenance dose, and the one used in the OASIS 4 trial. Earliest possible arrival is the start of month four.

If you are already on the 2.4mg Wegovy injection once weekly, the product information says you can be transitioned to 25mg tablets once daily, starting one week after your last injection, without restarting the escalation (subject to 25mg availability). Absorption from tablets varies more than from injections, so your prescriber will review how you get on. Switching from any other dose, or from a different medicine such as Mounjaro, needs a prescriber to set your starting point.
How to take them correctly
The timing rules for this medicine are stricter than almost any other tablet you will have taken, and getting them wrong means you do not absorb the dose you paid for.
- Take it first thing in the morning, after fasting for at least 8 hours
- Swallow the tablet whole — do not crush, split or chew it
- Use a sip of water (up to half a glass, 120ml)
- Wait at least 30 minutes before any food or drink
- Wait at least 30 minutes before any other oral medicine, including supplements
- Take it at the same time every day to build the habit
Overnight sleep usually covers the 8-hour fast, so for most people this means taking the tablet immediately on waking and delaying breakfast, coffee and morning medicines by half an hour. If your mornings are rushed or you take other tablets on waking, be honest with yourself about whether that routine is realistic before committing — taking it at the wrong time can reduce how well the tablet works.
If you eat too soon: Do not take a second tablet. Absorption for that day will simply be lower. Continue as normal the following morning and tighten the routine.

Who can and cannot take them
You may be eligible if
- You are 18 or over
- Your BMI is 30 kg/m² or above
- Your BMI is 27 to 30 kg/m² with at least one weight-related condition
- You are willing to combine treatment with a reduced-calorie diet and more activity
- You can reliably manage the morning fasting and 30-minute wait
Wegovy Tablets are not suitable if
- You are allergic to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
- You are already taking another GLP-1 medicine such as Mounjaro or Ozempic
- You have a current eating disorder, or a past one without specialist input
Tell your prescriber everything. Tell them if you have had pancreatitis, have serious stomach or bowel problems such as gastroparesis, have type 2 diabetes or diabetic eye disease, or have had thyroid cancer or a family history of medullary thyroid cancer. Semaglutide can cause low blood sugar with insulin or sulfonylureas, and the product information advises that thyroid monitoring be considered with levothyroxine and more frequent INR checks with warfarin.
Side effects and safety
The common side effects are gastrointestinal and mirror those of the injection. They are usually mild to moderate, cluster in the first weeks and after each dose increase, and settle with time.

Practical steps that help: eat smaller portions, stop when comfortably full rather than finishing the plate, avoid fatty and fried food in the first weeks, and keep fluids up — dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea is the main route to more serious kidney problems.
Seek urgent medical attention if you develop severe, persistent abdominal pain that may spread to your back (possible pancreatitis), sustained vomiting with an inability to keep fluids down, signs of an allergic reaction, or sudden loss of vision. In an emergency, call 999. If you have low mood or thoughts of harming yourself at any time, contact your GP or NHS 111.
Are Wegovy pills on the NHS?
Not routinely. The MHRA licence allows the medicine to be prescribed in the UK, but licensing and NHS funding are separate decisions: routine NHS use depends on a recommendation from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Check with your GP for the latest position.
For now, private prescription is the usual route to Wegovy Tablets. The Wegovy injection (not the tablet) is available on the NHS through specialist weight management services for people meeting the NICE TA875 criteria — adults with at least one weight-related condition and a BMI of at least 35, or 30 to 34.9 if they meet the criteria for referral to specialist weight management services (lower thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds), for a maximum of 2 years — but capacity is limited and waits are often long.
UK safety and prescribing information
- Legal status: Wegovy tablets are a prescription-only medicine (POM). At Access Doctor they are prescribed only after an online consultation with a GPhC-registered pharmacist independent prescriber, who confirms your weight and reviews your medical history and medicines.
- Licence: licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. We prescribe only within the licence.
- Pregnancy and contraception: do not take Wegovy tablets if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use contraception if you could become pregnant, and stop at least 2 months before trying to conceive, as the MHRA advises for semaglutide.
- Operations: tell your healthcare team, including the anaesthetist, before any procedure under general anaesthetic or deep sedation. Do not stop treatment without advice.
- Other medicines: tell your prescriber about everything you take, especially insulin or sulfonylureas (risk of low blood sugar), levothyroxine and warfarin.
- Reporting side effects: you can report suspected side effects to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme website or the Yellow Card app.

Are Wegovy pills as effective as the injection?
The trial results are in a similar range. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking oral semaglutide 25mg alongside diet and exercise lost an average of 13.6 percent of their body weight over 64 weeks, counting everyone who started treatment, or 16.6 percent in those who kept taking it as planned. The injection produced an average of 14.9 percent over 68 weeks in the STEP 1 trial. These are separate trials with different populations and cannot be compared head to head, but the overall picture is that the pill delivers weight loss in a similar range to the injection.
Can I switch from Wegovy injections to Wegovy pills?
Yes, and you may not need to restart at the lowest dose. The product information says people on the 2.4mg semaglutide injection once weekly can be transitioned to semaglutide 25mg tablets once daily, starting one week after their last injection. If you are on a lower injection dose, or you are switching from a different GLP-1 medicine such as Mounjaro, your prescriber will decide the appropriate starting point for you. Never change the form or dose of your treatment without discussing it with a prescriber first.
Are Wegovy pills the same as Rybelsus?
No, and this is an important distinction. Both are oral semaglutide made by Novo Nordisk, but Rybelsus is licensed only for type 2 diabetes and comes in much lower strengths of 3mg, 7mg and 14mg. Wegovy tablets are licensed specifically for chronic weight management and go up to 25mg. Rybelsus is not licensed for weight loss in the UK, so prescribing it for that purpose would be off label use.
What happens if I eat too soon after taking a Wegovy pill?
Eating or drinking within 30 minutes of taking the tablet lowers how much semaglutide your body absorbs, which means the dose you take may not be the dose you get. This is why the tablet must be taken first thing in the morning after fasting for at least eight hours, with a sip of water (up to half a glass, 120ml), and why you then wait at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other oral medicine. If you eat too soon, do not take a second tablet. Continue as normal the following morning.
