Wegovy pills — correctly called Wegovy Tablets — are a once-daily oral form of semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. Both are made by Novo Nordisk. Both are GLP-1 receptor agonists that reduce appetite, slow how quickly food leaves the stomach, and help regulate blood sugar. The difference is the delivery: a tablet swallowed every morning instead of a pen injected once a week.
Semaglutide is a peptide, and peptides are normally destroyed by stomach acid before they can be absorbed. Wegovy Tablets get around this using a co-formulated absorption enhancer called SNAC, which protects the semaglutide long enough for it to pass through the stomach lining into the bloodstream. That mechanism is also the reason the tablet has such strict timing rules, which we cover below.
Not the same as Rybelsus. Rybelsus is also oral semaglutide from Novo Nordisk, but it is licensed only for type 2 diabetes and comes in 3mg, 7mg and 14mg strengths. It is not licensed for weight loss in the UK. If a seller offers you "semaglutide tablets" without naming Wegovy, check exactly what you are being sold.
How much Wegovy pills cost in the UK
There is no NHS price for Wegovy Tablets because they are not available on the NHS. Novo Nordisk has not published a UK list price for the tablet either, which means every pharmacy and online provider sets its own. That is why the figures you see quoted vary so widely.

The Wegovy pill dose schedule
Wegovy Tablets use a four-step escalation with a minimum of one month at each dose before moving up. This is not optional pacing — it is how the licence is written, and it exists to limit the nausea and gut side effects that cluster around starting treatment and each increase.

1.5mg once daily — month 1
The starting dose for everyone new to the tablet. Expect this to be the month where side effects are most noticeable as your body adjusts.

4mg once daily — month 2 onwards
The first step up. Only move here if you have completed a full month at 1.5mg and are tolerating it reasonably well.

9mg once daily — month 3 onwards
Some people find an effective, tolerable level here and stay. There is no requirement to push to the top dose if you are progressing.

25mg once daily — month 4 onwards
The full maintenance dose, and the one used in the OASIS 4 trial. Earliest possible arrival is the start of month four.
Availability note: At UK launch, only the 1.5mg and 4mg strengths are stocked. The 9mg and 25mg strengths are expected to follow. If you are planning treatment now, factor in that the top doses may not be available the moment you are ready for them.
If you are already on the 2.4mg Wegovy injection privately, the MHRA states you can be transitioned straight to 25mg tablets once daily without restarting the escalation. Switching from any other dose, or from a different GLP-1 such as Mounjaro, needs a prescriber to set your starting point.
How to take them correctly
The timing rules for this medicine are stricter than almost any other tablet you will have taken, and getting them wrong means you do not absorb the dose you paid for.
- Take it first thing in the morning, after fasting for at least 8 hours
- Swallow the tablet whole — do not crush, split or chew it
- Use no more than a sip of water (under 120ml)
- Wait at least 30 minutes before any food or drink
- Wait at least 30 minutes before any other oral medicine, including supplements
- Take it at the same time every day to build the habit
Overnight sleep usually covers the 8-hour fast, so for most people this means taking the tablet immediately on waking and delaying breakfast, coffee and morning medicines by half an hour. If your mornings are rushed or you take other tablets on waking, be honest with yourself about whether that routine is realistic before committing — poor timing adherence is the most common reason the oral form underperforms.
If you eat too soon: Do not take a second tablet. Absorption for that day will simply be lower. Continue as normal the following morning and tighten the routine.

- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
- You or a close family member have had medullary thyroid carcinoma

Tell your prescriber everything. Semaglutide interacts with insulin and sulfonylureas (risk of low blood sugar), and its effect on stomach emptying can alter how other oral medicines are absorbed. Levothyroxine, oral contraceptives and warfarin all warrant a conversation.
Side effects and safety
The common side effects are gastrointestinal and mirror those of the injection. They are usually mild to moderate, cluster in the first weeks and after each dose increase, and settle with time.

Practical steps that help: eat smaller portions, stop when comfortably full rather than finishing the plate, avoid fatty and fried food in the first weeks, and keep fluids up — dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea is the main route to more serious kidney problems.
Seek urgent medical attention if you develop severe, persistent abdominal pain that may radiate to your back (possible pancreatitis), sustained vomiting with an inability to keep fluids down, signs of an allergic reaction, or new thoughts of self-harm. In an emergency, call 999.
Are Wegovy pills on the NHS?
No. The MHRA licence permits the medicine to be prescribed in the UK, but licensing and NHS funding are separate decisions. NHS availability requires an appraisal by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and that process has not concluded. NHS access is not expected during 2026.
For now, private prescription is the only route to Wegovy Tablets. The Wegovy injection is available on the NHS through specialist weight management services for people meeting NICE criteria — typically a BMI of at least 35 with a weight-related condition, or 30 to 34.9 with a referral to specialist services — but capacity is limited and waits are often long.

Are Wegovy pills as effective as the injection?
The results are broadly comparable. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking oral semaglutide 25mg alongside diet and exercise lost an average of 16.6 percent of their body weight over 64 weeks when they stayed on treatment as intended, and 13.6 percent when all participants were counted regardless of whether they continued. The injection produced an average of around 15 percent over 68 weeks in the STEP 1 trial. These are separate trials with different populations and cannot be compared head to head, but the overall picture is that the pill delivers weight loss in a similar range to the injection.
Can I switch from Wegovy injections to Wegovy pills?
Yes, and you may not need to restart at the lowest dose. The MHRA states that patients being treated privately with the 2.4mg semaglutide injection once weekly can be transitioned straight to semaglutide 25mg tablets once daily. If you are on a lower injection dose, or you are switching from a different GLP-1 medicine such as Mounjaro, your prescriber will decide the appropriate starting point for you. Never change the form or dose of your treatment without discussing it with a prescriber first.
Are Wegovy pills the same as Rybelsus?
No, and this is an important distinction. Both are oral semaglutide made by Novo Nordisk, but Rybelsus is licensed only for type 2 diabetes and comes in much lower strengths of 3mg, 7mg and 14mg. Wegovy tablets are licensed specifically for chronic weight management and go up to 25mg. Rybelsus is not licensed for weight loss in the UK, so prescribing it for that purpose would be off label use.
What happens if I eat too soon after taking a Wegovy pill?
Eating or drinking within 30 minutes of taking the tablet lowers how much semaglutide your body absorbs, which means the dose you take may not be the dose you get. This is why the tablet must be taken first thing in the morning after fasting for at least eight hours, with no more than a sip of water, and why you then wait at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other oral medicine. If you eat too soon, do not take a second tablet. Continue as normal the following morning.
