Canesten Thrush Cream is an antifungal treatment used to relieve the symptoms of vaginal thrush, such as itching, irritation, and discomfort. The active ingredient, clotrimazole, works by attacking cause of the infection, effectively eliminating the Candida yeast responsible for thrush. This cream is easy to apply directly to the affected area, providing targeted relief from external symptoms without affecting the body's natural balance.
Canesten 2% Thrush Cream contains clotrimazole, a well-established antifungal agent used to treat the external symptoms of vaginal thrush. Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of a yeast called Candida albicans, which can multiply out of control when the body's natural balance is disrupted — for example, following a course of antibiotics, during hormonal changes, or due to stress or a weakened immune system. Clotrimazole works by causing holes to form in the cell membrane of the Candida fungus, causing the contents of the cells to leak out and the fungus to die. Canesten 2% Thrush Cream is designed specifically for external use — applying it to the skin around the vagina and vulva — to relieve the itching, soreness, and redness associated with thrush. It is suitable for women and men aged 18 to 60 and can be ordered conveniently through Access Doctor following a short online consultation.
Canesten makes a range of thrush treatments and it is important to understand the difference. Canesten 2% Thrush Cream is an external cream only — it is applied to the skin around the outside of the vagina to relieve external symptoms such as itching and soreness, but it does not treat the internal infection inside the vagina. For a complete treatment, it is often used alongside an internal thrush treatment such as a Canesten pessary (vaginal tablet) or alongside an oral fluconazole capsule, which treats the infection from the inside. If you are unsure which product is right for you, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
Wash your hands thoroughly before and after each application. Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area — the skin around the outside of the vagina and vulva — 2 to 3 times a day, rubbing it in gently. Continue to apply it for as long as directed — for women, treatment should usually continue for up to one week after completing any internal thrush treatment. For men treating penile thrush, apply 2 to 3 times a day for two weeks. Do not insert the cream inside the vagina — this product is for external use only. If your symptoms don't improve within 7 days, speak to your GP or pharmacist for more advice.
No — Canesten cream contains ingredients that can weaken latex and rubber, which means it can damage latex condoms and diaphragms and make them unreliable as contraception. While using this cream — and for several days after finishing treatment — avoid relying on latex condoms or a diaphragm. Use a non-latex condom as an alternative, or abstain from sex during treatment. It is also worth bearing in mind that having sex while you have thrush can be uncomfortable and can potentially pass the infection to your partner.
Canesten 2% Thrush Cream is generally very well tolerated and most women experience no side effects at all. The most commonly reported ones are mild and temporary — including a slight burning or stinging sensation, redness, and itching immediately after applying the cream. These usually settle quickly. In rare cases, a more significant allergic reaction can occur, with symptoms such as a rash, blistering, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat. If you experience any of these, stop using the cream immediately and seek urgent medical attention. The cream contains cetostearyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol, which can occasionally cause local skin reactions in sensitive individuals.
While Canesten 2% Thrush Cream is effective for straightforward cases of thrush, there are certain situations where you should speak to a doctor before treating yourself. You should consult a doctor if this is the first time you have had thrush symptoms and are not certain it is thrush, if you have had more than two thrush infections in the last six months, if you or your partner have ever had a sexually transmitted infection, if you have unusual or foul-smelling discharge, irregular or blood-stained vaginal bleeding, sores or blisters around the vagina, lower abdominal pain, or pain when urinating — as these symptoms may indicate a different condition that needs a different treatment.
Yes — you can continue to use Canesten 2% Thrush Cream during your period, as it is applied externally to the skin rather than internally. However, if you are also using an internal thrush treatment such as a pessary or vaginal cream at the same time, menstrual flow may reduce its effectiveness slightly. If possible, it is best to start thrush treatment either before or after your period. If your period arrives during treatment, continue applying the external cream as normal and complete the full course.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should speak to your GP before using Canesten 2% Thrush Cream. Topical clotrimazole is generally considered one of the safer options for treating thrush during pregnancy as it acts locally rather than being absorbed into the bloodstream in significant amounts. However, as a precaution, always seek medical advice before using any thrush treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding so that your doctor can confirm it is the most appropriate option for your circumstances.
