Kliovance is a continuous combined form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), containing two active ingredients: estradiol 1mg, an oestrogen, and norethisterone acetate 0.5mg, a progestogen. Unlike cyclical HRT regimens, both hormones are taken together every day without a break, which is why it's described as "continuous combined".
It's licensed to relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats in postmenopausal women who are at least one year past their last natural period and who still have their womb, since the progestogen component works to protect the womb lining from the effects of oestrogen. As a lower-dose HRT option, Kliovance can be a suitable choice for women who are more sensitive to hormones or who have experienced side effects with higher-dose alternatives.
Kliovance also has a licensed role in helping to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis in women at significant risk of fracture who are unable to take other osteoporosis treatments.
Kliovance is taken as one tablet a day, at around the same time each day, continuing straight from one pack into the next without a break in between. Because it's a continuous combined HRT rather than a cyclical one, most women find their regular bleeding stops within the first year of use. Some spotting or light bleeding is common during the first three months of treatment and usually settles as your body adjusts.
If you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as you remember, provided this is within 12 hours of your usual time. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and continue with your next tablet as normal the following day, rather than taking two tablets to make up for it.
Kliovance combines two hormones, estradiol and norethisterone acetate, taken continuously to top up the oestrogen your body stops producing around menopause while the progestogen protects the lining of the womb. Taking both hormones every day, rather than cyclically, is what makes it a "continuous combined" HRT.
Most women stop having regular monthly bleeds within the first year of taking Kliovance, as it doesn't follow a cyclical pattern. Spotting or light, irregular bleeding is common in the first three months and usually settles down; if bleeding continues or starts up after this initial period, it's worth checking in with your prescriber.
Kliovance and Kliofem both contain estradiol and norethisterone acetate as continuous combined HRT, but Kliofem is formulated at double the strength of Kliovance. A prescriber may suggest one over the other depending on how sensitive you are to hormones and how well your symptoms are controlled.
HRT, including Kliovance, carries a small increased risk of breast cancer and blood clots (venous thromboembolism). These risks are weighed up against the severity of your symptoms and your personal medical history before treatment is prescribed, and HRT is generally used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed.
If you miss a tablet, take it as soon as you remember, as long as it's within 12 hours of your usual time. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed tablet and take your next one at the usual time the following day, without doubling up.
