Prochlorperazine (brand name Stemetil) is a prescription-only anti-sickness medicine. It relieves nausea and vomiting, and the dizziness of vertigo from inner-ear problems such as labyrinthitis and Ménière’s disease. We supply it to adults after a review by our pharmacist prescribers.
Prochlorperazine can make you drowsy, so don’t drive or use machinery until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol. Stop taking it and get medical help straight away if you get stiffness, shaking, unusual movements of your face or tongue, or a high temperature with stiff muscles. If sickness lasts more than a few days, or you can’t keep fluids down, see your GP or call NHS 111.

Prochlorperazine is a phenothiazine medicine that has been used for many years to treat nausea and vomiting. It works on the part of the brain that triggers sickness, and on the balance signals from the inner ear, so it’s particularly useful when sickness comes with dizziness, as in labyrinthitis and Ménière’s disease. Stemetil is the original brand; generic prochlorperazine 5mg tablets contain the same medicine at the same strength.
Because it’s prescription-only, one of our pharmacist prescribers checks your symptoms, health and other medicines first. If it’s right for you, the prescription is issued and dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy (No. 9011198). If it isn’t, we’ll tell you what to do instead. Domperidone and cyclizine are other options for sickness, and they work in different ways. Our guide to prochlorperazine explains more.

Nausea and vomiting are among the most common reasons people seek medical advice in the UK, and can also occur alongside vertigo (a spinning or dizzy sensation) caused by conditions such as Ménière's disease and labyrinthitis. Prochlorperazine is a long-established anti-sickness medicine that works on the parts of the brain and inner ear responsible for triggering these symptoms.
Prochlorperazine is sometimes known by the brand name Stemetil, though generic prochlorperazine 5mg tablets contain the same active ingredient at the same strength and are fully licensed UK medicines regulated by the MHRA.
Prochlorperazine 5mg tablets are used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting, and to relieve vertigo from inner-ear problems such as labyrinthitis and Ménière’s disease. We supply them to adults aged 18 and over. Our prochlorperazine guide explains more.
Yes. Prochlorperazine is prescription-only, so you need a prescription, but you don’t need a GP appointment. You complete a short online consultation, one of our pharmacist prescribers reviews it, and if prochlorperazine is right for you, the prescription is issued and dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy.
Most people notice the sickness easing within an hour of a dose. If you’re being sick too often to keep a tablet down, see your GP or call NHS 111, as you may need a different form of treatment.
Use it for the shortest time you need, usually a few days. If you still need it after that, or your sickness keeps coming back, see your GP to find out the cause. Longer use raises the chance of side effects such as unusual movements.
Tell us about everything you take. Prochlorperazine adds to the drowsiness caused by other medicines that make you sleepy, and it shouldn’t be taken with some medicines for mental health, heart rhythm and Parkinson’s disease. Our prescriber checks this before it’s supplied.
For most adults it’s safe for short-term use at the usual dose. It isn’t suitable if you have certain heart, brain or movement conditions, and older people are more likely to get side effects. Our prescriber checks your health and medicines before it’s supplied.
We don’t supply prochlorperazine if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s sometimes used for severe pregnancy sickness under the care of a GP or hospital, who can weigh the benefits and risks. If you’re pregnant and being sick, speak to your GP or midwife.
Complete our short online consultation; it takes around five minutes. If one of our pharmacist prescribers confirms prochlorperazine is right for you, the prescription is issued and dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy (No. 9011198). If approved before 3pm, Monday to Friday, it’s dispatched the same day by Royal Mail Tracked 48, Tracked 24 or Special Delivery guaranteed by 1pm next working day. 28 tablets cost £17.99, including the consultation and prescription.
Yes. Stemetil is the original brand of prochlorperazine. Generic prochlorperazine 5mg tablets contain the same medicine at the same strength, and they work in the same way.
Not the 5mg tablets: they’re prescription-only. Buccastem M, a 3mg tablet that dissolves between your gum and lip, can be bought from a pharmacy for sickness with a diagnosed migraine. For other causes of sickness, prochlorperazine 5mg tablets need a prescription, which our online consultation includes.
All three relieve sickness, but they work in different ways. Prochlorperazine is often chosen when sickness comes with dizziness. Cyclizine is an antihistamine that also suits travel sickness and vertigo, and it’s a pharmacy medicine. Domperidone helps the stomach empty, and it’s prescription-only. Our prescribers can help you choose.
