What is Domperidone?
Domperidone is an anti nausea medication also known as an antiemetic drug which has multiple uses. The most common use is to alleviate symptoms of nausea and vomiting caused by migraines, stress, food poisoning and viruses. It also increases the motility of the stomach and intestine by tightening the muscles at the top of the stomach, and relaxing the muscles at the bottom, helping the stomach to empty quickly and ease symptoms of stomach cramps, bloating and heartburn.
Occasionally Domperidone is also prescribed unlicensed to lactating women to increase milk production during breast feeding. However please note that Access Doctor only prescribes Domperidone for treating symptoms of nausea and vomiting in adults.
Domperidone uses
Domperidone is primarily used to help overcome symptoms of nausea and vomiting, but can also be used to increase the motility of the smooth muscles in the stomach and the gastro-intestinal tract to help with symptoms of stomach cramps, bloating and heart burn.
Occasionally Domperidone can also be prescribed to help stimulate milk production in lactating women.
Access Doctor's online service will only prescribe Domperidone for the sole purpose of treating symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
Domperidone mechanism of action
Domperidone works by blocking the signals on the receptors in the brain which controls the feeling of sickness.
Additionally it also works as a gastric prokinetic agent, by increasing the motility of the muscles in the stomach and the intestine, and as a galactagogue which promotes lactation in women.
