Betacap scalp application contains betamethasone valerate 0.1% in a topical solution formulation designed specifically for scalp use. Betamethasone valerate is classified as a potent corticosteroid — one step below very potent (such as clobetasol propionate in Etrivex shampoo), and significantly more powerful than the mild or moderate corticosteroids used for facial or body skin conditions.
It is prescribed when standard anti-dandruff shampoos or over-the-counter scalp treatments have not adequately controlled the condition. Typical indications include:
- Scalp psoriasis — well-defined, thick silvery plaques on the scalp
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis with significant inflammation not controlled by antifungal shampoos alone
- Scalp eczema — itchy, inflamed scalp skin
Betacap is not appropriate for alopecia (hair loss), skin infections, rosacea, acne, or perioral dermatitis. It does not treat the underlying cause of scalp psoriasis but effectively controls inflammation and symptoms during a flare.
Prescription requirement: Betacap is a prescription-only medicine (POM) in the UK. It cannot be purchased over the counter. Access Doctor requires a clinical consultation before prescribing, during which you will need to disclose: current medications (particularly other corticosteroids), any scalp infections, broken or cracked scalp skin, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and any previous adverse reactions to steroid treatments.
Dosage
| Patient group | Dose | Frequency | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adults | Small amount to affected areas only | Twice daily initially; reduce to once daily when controlled | Up to 4 weeks; review with prescriber before continuing |
| Elderly | Same; use minimum effective dose | As directed by prescriber | Shorter courses preferred; review sooner |
| Children | Prescribed by specialist only | Under specialist supervision | Specialist guidance required |
Do not exceed the prescribed dose. Apply only to affected areas — there is no clinical benefit to applying Betacap to healthy scalp skin, and it increases absorption and side effect risk.
How to Apply Betacap: Step-by-Step
1
Wash and dry hands
Wash thoroughly before each application. Dry completely.
2
Measure the dose
Pour the prescribed amount into your palm before applying — do not apply directly from the bottle to the scalp.
3
Apply to affected areas
Using fingertips, spread the solution gently across affected scalp areas in sweeping motions following the direction of hair growth.
4
Spread to a thin, even layer
A thin layer is sufficient — do not apply heavily. Excess solution does not improve efficacy but increases side effect risk.
5
Wash hands again immediately
Remove all solution from your hands after application. Avoid touching your face or eyes.
6
Wait 30 minutes
Before applying any other scalp products, hair products or moisturisers. Other products can dilute Betacap or interfere with absorption.
7
Allow to dry naturally
Do not use a hairdryer immediately after application. Allow the solution to dry on its own before styling.
How Long Does Betacap Take to Work?
Most patients notice a reduction in itch and inflammation within 3–7 days of starting Betacap. Visible improvement in scaling and redness typically follows within 1–2 weeks of consistent twice-daily use. If there is no improvement after 2 weeks, contact your prescriber — an alternative or combination approach may be needed.
3–7
days for itch and inflammation to begin reducing
1–2
weeks for visible improvement in scaling and redness with consistent use
Practical Tips for Using Betacap
- If applying before bed, place a towel over your pillow to protect bedding from the solution
- Wash your hair before applying if needed — ensure hair is completely dry first. Wet hair dilutes and spreads the solution beyond affected areas
- Apply only to affected areas — there is no benefit to treating healthy scalp skin
- Avoid cuts, scratches and broken areas of scalp during application
- Set a consistent daily alarm to maintain regular dosing intervals
- Keep Betacap away from your eyes, ears, mouth and unaffected facial skin
- Store at room temperature; keep the container tightly closed and away from heat and flame — the solution is flammable
Flammability: Betacap scalp application contains isopropyl alcohol and is highly flammable. Keep away from naked flames and do not smoke immediately after application until the solution has fully dried.
Side Effects and What to Watch For
Side effects are uncommon when Betacap is used correctly and for the recommended duration. The risk increases significantly with prolonged or extensive use.
Common (may affect up to 1 in 10)
- Mild burning or stinging on first application — usually settles within a few days
- Mild itching or skin irritation at the application site
Uncommon to rare with correct use — risk increases with overuse
- Skin thinning (atrophy) — particularly with prolonged daily use or occlusion
- Stretch marks (striae) at the application site
- Increased susceptibility to scalp infections
- Visual disturbances (blurred vision, cataracts, glaucoma) — report any visual changes to your prescriber promptly
- HPA axis suppression (adrenal suppression) with very extensive or prolonged use — report unexplained fatigue, weight loss or dizziness
Long-term use: Once your scalp condition is controlled, your prescriber will recommend gradually reducing application frequency. For chronic conditions (recurring psoriasis or eczema), intermittent use under prescriber supervision is preferable to continuous daily application. Do not stop abruptly after prolonged use — reduce gradually as directed.
Betacap vs Betnovate Scalp Application
Both Betacap and Betnovate scalp application contain betamethasone valerate 0.1% and are classified as potent corticosteroids. Both are licensed for the same scalp indications. The primary differences are in the vehicle (formulation base) and practical handling:
| Feature | Betacap | Betnovate Scalp Application |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Betamethasone valerate 0.1% | Betamethasone valerate 0.1% |
| Potency class | Potent | Potent |
| Vehicle | Scalp solution (isopropyl alcohol base) | Scalp application solution |
| Drying time | Dries quickly due to alcohol content | Similar |
| Feel on scalp | Lightweight, non-greasy | Lightweight, non-greasy |
| Licensed indications | Scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczema | Scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczema |
In clinical practice, both are interchangeable for most patients. Your prescriber will select the most appropriate product based on your clinical history, previous treatment responses and individual preference.
Using Betacap Alongside Other Scalp Treatments
Betacap is often used as part of a broader scalp treatment plan. Common combinations and guidance:
Betacap + Ketoconazole shampoo (Nizoral)
For seborrhoeic dermatitis where both the fungal component and inflammation need treating. The antifungal shampoo targets the yeast; Betacap controls the inflammatory response. Use separately — wash with ketoconazole shampoo, dry hair thoroughly, then apply Betacap.
Betacap + Dovobet gel (Dovobet)
Using two potent corticosteroid-containing products simultaneously is generally not recommended without prescriber guidance, as this increases the risk of cumulative steroid side effects. Discuss with your prescriber before combining.
Betacap + Cocois ointment (Cocois)
Cocois is sometimes used first to soften thick scale before applying a corticosteroid. Apply Cocois the night before, shampoo out in the morning, dry hair completely, then apply Betacap as prescribed.
Always consult your prescriber before combining scalp treatments. Multiple products applied simultaneously can alter absorption, effectiveness and side effect profiles.

What is Betacap used to treat?
Betacap scalp application (betamethasone valerate 0.1%) treats inflammatory scalp conditions including scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp eczema. It is not suitable for alopecia, acne, rosacea or skin infections.
How long before Betacap starts working?
Most patients notice a reduction in itch and inflammation within 3–7 days. Visible improvement in scaling and redness typically follows within 1–2 weeks of consistent use. Contact your prescriber if there is no improvement after 2 weeks.
Is Betacap the same as Betnovate scalp application?
Both contain betamethasone valerate 0.1% and are classified as potent corticosteroids, licensed for the same scalp conditions. The formulation vehicle differs slightly. Both are clinically interchangeable for most patients.
What should I tell my prescriber before using Betacap?
Tell your prescriber about any scalp infections, current medications (especially other corticosteroids), pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and any previous adverse reactions to steroid treatments.
How long does a course of Betacap last?
Most courses run for 2–4 weeks of twice-daily application, reducing to once daily as symptoms improve. Prolonged or continuous use without clinical review is not recommended.
Can I use Betacap with other scalp treatments?
Betacap can generally be used alongside antifungal shampoos (such as Nizoral) when both are clinically indicated. Always discuss combination use with your prescriber. When using multiple products, apply Betacap first and wait 30 minutes before applying others.
What if I miss a dose?
Apply as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one. Resume your normal dosing schedule at the next scheduled time.
Is Betacap safe during pregnancy?
Betacap should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk. Potent corticosteroids applied to large areas or for prolonged periods carry a small theoretical risk of fetal harm. Inform your prescriber if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Limited, short-term use to small areas is generally considered lower risk, but requires prescriber assessment.
