An itchy, inflamed scalp caused by psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or eczema can significantly affect your daily life and confidence. Betacap scalp application provides targeted, fast-acting relief by delivering betamethasone valerate — a potent anti-inflammatory corticosteroid — directly to the affected scalp areas where it is needed most.

Start Consultation →What Is Betacap and How Does It Work?
Betacap scalp application 0.1% contains betamethasone valerate, a moderately potent topical corticosteroid. Corticosteroids should not be confused with anabolic steroids — they are anti-inflammatory agents that work by suppressing the overactive immune response underlying inflammatory scalp conditions.
When applied to the scalp, betamethasone penetrates skin cells and blocks the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and other mediators responsible for redness, itching, and swelling. In scalp psoriasis, it also suppresses the accelerated skin cell turnover that produces characteristic silvery scales.
Not for skin infections: Betacap must not be used on scalp areas with active bacterial, fungal, or viral infection unless the infection is being simultaneously treated. If you develop a scalp infection during treatment, contact your prescriber.
Conditions Betacap Treats
- Scalp psoriasis — first-line topical corticosteroid; reduces plaque thickness, scaling, and redness
- Seborrheic dermatitis — reduces Malassezia-driven scalp inflammation, often used alongside ketoconazole shampoo
- Scalp eczema (atopic and contact dermatitis) — calms the inflammatory response driving itching and flaking
How to Apply Betacap Correctly
1
Wash hands: Wash your hands thoroughly before and after each application.
2
Dry scalp: Apply to a dry scalp, ideally after your hair has dried naturally.
3
Apply to affected areas only: Hold the nozzle over the affected area and apply a small amount directly. Spread gently with your fingertips in the direction of hair growth.
4
Massage in gently: Rub in gently until the solution is absorbed. Avoid excess — a thin layer is all that is needed.
5
Allow to dry naturally: Do not use a hairdryer after application.
6
Frequency: Initially twice daily. As symptoms improve, reduce to once daily. Always follow your prescriber’s guidance.
7
Other products: Wait at least 30 minutes after Betacap before applying any other scalp products, moisturisers, or hair products.
Flammability warning: Betacap scalp application is flammable. Do not use near open flames, lit cigarettes, or heat sources. Allow the scalp to dry completely before using a hairdryer.
Side Effects of Betacap
Betacap is generally well-tolerated when used as directed. A mild stinging or burning sensation for a few minutes after application is common when first starting treatment and usually resolves within a few days.
Rare side effects with prolonged or excessive use include:
- Skin thinning at the application site
- Increased visibility of blood vessels
- Worsening or spreading of a skin infection
- Adrenal suppression (with very extensive use) — report unexplained fatigue, weight loss, or dizziness to your prescriber
- Visual disturbances — report any blurred vision promptly
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Betacap should be used with caution. Discuss with your prescriber if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding before use.

What is Betacap used for?
Betacap scalp application (betamethasone valerate 0.1%) is a prescription topical corticosteroid used to relieve inflammation, itching, and redness associated with scalp psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and eczema on the scalp.
How do I apply Betacap scalp application?
Apply a small amount of Betacap directly to the affected areas of the scalp using the bottle nozzle. Gently massage in until absorbed. Apply once or twice daily as directed by your prescriber. Allow to dry naturally — do not use a hairdryer.
How quickly does Betacap work?
Most people notice a reduction in itching and redness within the first 1–2 weeks of use. Significant improvement in scaling and inflammation typically occurs within 2–4 weeks of twice-daily application.
Can I use Betacap long-term?
Betacap should be used for the shortest time necessary and under regular prescriber review. Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids carries risks including skin thinning. Your prescriber will advise on the appropriate treatment course.
Is Betacap the same as Betnovate scalp?
Both Betacap and Betnovate scalp application contain betamethasone valerate 0.1% and have equivalent potency and indications. The main differences are in their vehicle formulation and brand. Both are prescription-only medicines available from Access Doctor.
