Beclometasone nasal spray usually takes a few days to start easing congestion and pressure, with the full benefit building over one to two weeks of regular daily use. It works best when used consistently rather than only when symptoms flare.
Yes. Complete a short online consultation and a GPhC-registered pharmacist prescriber will review your answers to confirm whether beclometasone nasal spray is suitable for you before it is dispensed and delivered discreetly across the UK.
Beclomethasone nasal spray is a corticosteroid spray that reduces inflammation inside the nose. It is licensed in the UK for treating allergic rhinitis (including hay fever) and nasal polyposis. It is also widely used in the management of chronic sinusitis — particularly when there is underlying inflammation or nasal polyps — because it helps reduce swelling in the nasal passages and sinuses, relieving symptoms such as a blocked nose, facial pressure, and post‑nasal drip.
The typical beclomethasone dose for sinusitis and nasal polyposis is two sprays into each nostril twice a day (total daily dose 400 micrograms). Once symptoms are controlled, your prescriber may recommend reducing to the lowest effective maintenance dose, for example, one spray in each nostril twice daily. Always use the spray as directed by your own doctor after your Access Doctor online consultation.
- Gently blow your nose to clear the nostrils before use. - Shake the bottle well and remove the cap. - Tilt your head slightly forward. Insert the nozzle into one nostril and aim it away from the centre of your nose, towards the outer wall. - While pressing down on the spray, breathe in gently through your nose, then breathe out through your mouth. - Repeat in the other nostril. - Wipe the nozzle and replace the cap. Never share your spray with others, and clean the nozzle regularly with a tissue. The spray works best when used continuously — not just on days you feel blocked.
Most people tolerate it well. The most common beclomethasone nasal spray side effects include: Mild irritation, stinging, or dryness in the nose or throat Sneezing Unpleasant taste or smell Nosebleeds (usually minor; if persistent, stop and consult a prescriber) Serious systemic side effects are very rare because the spray acts locally and only tiny amounts reach the bloodstream. If you experience severe allergic reactions, unexplained facial swelling, or breathing difficulties, stop using it and seek urgent medical attention.
You should not use beclomethasone nasal spray if you: Are allergic to beclomethasone dipropionate or any of the other ingredients Have an untreated infection in your nose (e.g., herpes simplex, fungal infection) Have recently had nasal surgery or injury (until healing is complete) Also, tell your Access Doctor prescriber if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other corticosteroids (including tablets, inhalers, or skin creams) before starting this treatment. Your online consultation will screen for all these points.
Yes. It is safe to use alongside saline rinses, painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen, and oral antibiotics if they have been prescribed. You can also use a short course of a decongestant nasal spray (like xylometazoline) for severe acute blockage, but these should not be used for more than 5‑7 days. Always keep your prescriber informed of all medicines you are taking — including prescription, over‑the‑counter, and herbal remedies.
Yes, under medical supervision. Many people with chronic sinusitis or nasal polyps use corticosteroid nasal sprays like beclomethasone for months or years to keep inflammation under control. At recommended doses, systemic absorption is minimal and long‑term side effects are rare. Your own doctor or GP should review your treatment regularly.
