Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including acute bacterial sinusitis (a sinus infection caused by bacteria). It works by stopping bacteria from growing and multiplying, helping your immune system clear the infection so that congestion, facial pain and pressure can settle. Doxycycline is often used as an alternative for people who are allergic to penicillin-based antibiotics such as amoxicillin. It is usually taken as a short course once or twice daily, and it is important to complete the full course even if you feel better. Antibiotics do not help viral sinusitis, which is far more common, so a UK prescriber will review your symptoms during a short online consultation to confirm whether doxycycline is appropriate before it is dispensed and delivered discreetly across the UK.

A typical doxycycline course for sinusitis is 200 mg on the first day, then 100 mg once daily, usually for 5 to 7 days in total — but always follow the exact dose and length given to you after your consultation. Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water while sitting or standing upright, and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes afterwards, as this reduces the risk of throat or stomach irritation. You can take it with food to reduce stomach upset. Avoid taking it at the same time as indigestion remedies, or supplements containing calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc, as these stop it being absorbed — separate them by 2 to 3 hours. Complete the full course even if you feel better after a few days, and never share antibiotics or save them for later.
Doxycycline is an effective option for acute bacterial sinusitis and is often used when someone is allergic to penicillin. However, most sinusitis is viral and does not need antibiotics, so a prescriber will assess whether a bacterial infection is likely before recommending it.
Many people start to feel better within 48 to 72 hours of starting doxycycline. It is important to complete the full course as directed, even if your symptoms improve, to fully clear the infection and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
A common course is 200 mg on the first day, then 100 mg once daily, usually for 5 to 7 days. Your exact dose and course length will be confirmed by your prescriber after your online consultation.
Doxycycline is a prescription-only antibiotic. You can request it through a short online consultation, and a GPhC-registered prescriber will review whether a bacterial sinus infection is likely and whether doxycycline is safe and suitable for you before it is dispensed.
The most common side effects are nausea, stomach upset and diarrhoea. Doxycycline can also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so use sun protection. Rarely it can cause a serious allergic reaction or severe diarrhoea, which need urgent medical attention.
Doxycycline should not be taken if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are under 12 years old, or are allergic to tetracycline antibiotics. Tell your prescriber about any liver problems, lupus, or medicines such as warfarin or retinoids so they can check it is safe for you.
Occasional moderate alcohol is usually fine, but avoid heavy drinking, especially if you have liver problems. Doxycycline increases sun sensitivity, so use a high-factor sunscreen, cover up and avoid sunbeds while taking it to reduce the risk of sunburn.
