Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic and the first-choice treatment for chlamydia in UK guidance from the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH). It stops Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow, so your immune system can clear the infection.
The course is one 100mg capsule twice a day for 7 days. It treats genital, rectal and throat infections, and cures slightly more infections than the alternative, azithromycin, particularly rectal infection. Our doxycycline for chlamydia guide has more detail.

Doxycycline may be suitable if you: - are 18 or over; - have tested positive for chlamydia, or a sexual partner has tested positive; - aren’t allergic to doxycycline or other tetracycline antibiotics, such as lymecycline or minocycline.
This service isn’t suitable if you: - are pregnant or might be pregnant. Doxycycline can affect a baby’s developing bones and teeth; - are breastfeeding, because doxycycline passes into breast milk; - have pain low in your tummy, pain during sex, or bleeding between periods or after sex; - have pain or swelling in a testicle, or a fever; - have symptoms but no positive test, and no partner has tested positive.
In these situations, please see your GP, a sexual health clinic or, if you’re pregnant, your midwife. They can examine you and prescribe the right treatment.
Tell the prescriber if you: - have liver problems, myasthenia gravis or lupus; - are taking: - warfarin; - isotretinoin or other retinoids; - medicines for epilepsy; - indigestion remedies; - iron, calcium, zinc or magnesium supplements.
Contraception: most hormonal contraception isn’t affected by doxycycline, but tell the prescriber what you use.
The course lasts 7 days. Symptoms usually start to settle within a few days and have often gone within one to two weeks. Avoid sex until you and your partner have both finished treatment and any symptoms have gone. You don’t usually need a test to check it has worked, but see a doctor if your symptoms haven’t cleared two weeks after finishing.

Doxycycline is a 7-day course and is the first choice in UK guidance, because it cures slightly more infections and works better for rectal infection. Azithromycin is a 3-day course, used if you’re allergic to doxycycline or can’t take it. Avoid sex until you’ve finished doxycycline, or until 7 days after your last azithromycin tablet.
No. Doxycycline can affect a baby’s developing teeth and bones, and it passes into breast milk. Our online service doesn’t treat chlamydia during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please contact your GP, midwife or a sexual health clinic, who can prescribe a safe alternative and arrange the follow-up test that’s needed in pregnancy.
You need a positive test, or a sexual partner who has tested positive for chlamydia. If a partner has told you they have chlamydia, a prescriber can treat you without waiting for your own result, but it’s still worth getting tested. We don’t treat on symptoms alone, because other infections can cause the same symptoms.
Moderate drinking is unlikely to affect treatment, but it can make nausea worse. Drinking large amounts can make doxycycline less effective, so it’s best to keep alcohol to a minimum until you’ve finished the course.
Doxycycline can irritate or even ulcerate the food pipe if a capsule sticks on the way down. Take each capsule with a full glass of water while sitting or standing, and stay upright for at least 30 minutes afterwards.
