Doxycycline is the first-line antibiotic recommended by the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) for treating chlamydia. It works by stopping the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis from reproducing, clearing the infection in most cases within 1–2 weeks.
Available as 100mg capsules, the standard course is 100mg twice daily for 7 days. Unlike single-dose azithromycin, doxycycline has a higher cure rate and is suitable for both uncomplicated genital chlamydia and rectal chlamydia infections.

Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline class of antibiotics and works by inhibiting protein synthesis in the chlamydia bacteria, preventing it from replicating and spreading within your body.

Clinical evidence shows that a 7-day course of Doxycycline 100mg twice daily achieves a cure rate of over 97% for uncomplicated genital chlamydia — higher than single-dose azithromycin (approximately 77–83%).
Doxycycline vs Azithromycin for Chlamydia:
Doxycycline 100mg twice daily x 7 days: Cure rate 97%+, BASHH first-line treatment, suitable for genital and rectal chlamydia
- Azithromycin 1g single dose: Cure rate 77–83%, no longer first-line per BASHH 2022 guidelines, may be used in pregnancy only
Who is Doxycycline suitable for?
Doxycycline for chlamydia is suitable for adults aged 18 and over who have tested positive for chlamydia or have been notified as a contact of someone with confirmed chlamydia. It is not suitable for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a known allergy to tetracycline antibiotics.
A 7-day course of Doxycycline (100mg twice daily) typically clears chlamydia within 1–2 weeks. You should avoid sex for 7 days after both you and your partner(s) have completed treatment, even if symptoms resolve sooner. A test of cure is not routinely recommended unless symptoms persist.
Yes. At Access Doctor, you can complete a free online consultation in minutes. If our prescribers confirm you are suitable, Doxycycline will be issued on prescription and dispensed by our registered pharmacy. No GP appointment is required.
Doxycycline (100mg twice daily for 7 days) is now the BASHH-recommended first-line treatment for chlamydia, with a cure rate above 97%. Azithromycin (1g single dose) has a lower cure rate of 77–83% and is no longer recommended as first-line, though it may be used in pregnancy where Doxycycline is contraindicated.
No. Doxycycline is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as it may harm fetal bone development and tooth development. If you are pregnant and have chlamydia, your doctor may prescribe Azithromycin or Amoxicillin instead. Always inform our prescribers of your pregnancy status during the consultation.
You do not always need a positive test result. If you have been notified by a partner that they have tested positive for chlamydia (contact tracing), you may be eligible for treatment without your own test result. Our prescribers will assess your situation during the free online consultation.
There is no direct interaction between Doxycycline and alcohol, but drinking alcohol can make nausea and dizziness worse. It is advisable to avoid or limit alcohol during your 7-day course and ensure you stay well hydrated. Alcohol does not reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic.
Once your consultation is approved and your prescription issued, your Doxycycline is typically dispatched the same day (for orders placed before 3pm on weekdays) with free standard UK delivery. Express next-day delivery is also available at checkout.
