Duac Gel is a dermatologist-recommended treatment combining two active ingredients, Clindamycin and Benzoyl Peroxide, to effectively target and eliminate acne-causing bacteria, reduce inflammation, and unclog pores. Duac Gel is fast-acting and gentle on your skin, ensuring maximum effectiveness with minimal irritation. It's suitable for all skin types and can be used as a part of your daily skincare routine.
Duac is a prescription-only topical gel containing two active ingredients — clindamycin phosphate (1%) and benzoyl peroxide (3% or 5%) — that work together to tackle acne from two different angles. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that stops acne-causing bacteria from multiplying, while benzoyl peroxide kills those bacteria directly and also helps to unblock pores by breaking down dead skin cells and excess oil. The combination of the two ingredients in a single gel makes Duac a more convenient and effective option than using each ingredient separately. It also helps to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance, as the benzoyl peroxide prevents bacteria from adapting to the clindamycin. Duac is suitable for adults and young people aged 12 and over. A consultation with one of our clinicians at Access Doctor is required before it can be prescribed.
Gently wash the affected area with a mild cleanser, rinse with warm water, and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of Duac gel to the entire affected area of the face — not just individual spots — once a day in the evening. Avoid applying it to the eyes, mouth, lips, nostrils, or any broken or irritated skin. Wash your hands thoroughly immediately after applying. Do not apply more than directed — using extra gel will not speed up results but will increase the risk of irritation. If you miss an evening application, apply it as soon as you remember, but if it's almost time for the next day's dose, skip it and carry on as normal.
Duac is one of the faster-acting topical acne treatments available. Many people begin to notice an improvement in inflammatory spots within 2 weeks of starting treatment, with more significant results typically visible after 4 to 6 weeks of regular use. Clinical studies have shown that Duac can reduce acne lesions by up to two thirds within the first month of use. It should not be used for more than 12 weeks at a time — if your acne hasn't improved after this period, speak to your own doctor, who can advise on alternative treatments.
The most commonly reported side effects, particularly when you first start using Duac, are skin dryness, redness, peeling, itching, and a mild burning or stinging sensation. These usually settle within a few weeks as your skin adjusts to the treatment. If irritation is severe, reduce to applying every other day until your skin acclimates, then build back up. As with all clindamycin-containing products, there is a small risk of diarrhoea caused by antibiotic absorption through the skin — if you develop severe, persistent, or bloody diarrhoea at any point during or after using Duac, stop using it immediately and contact your GP promptly.
Yes — Duac gel contains benzoyl peroxide, which can bleach or discolour hair, clothing, towels, and bed linen if it comes into contact with them. To minimise the risk, apply the gel in the evening, allow it to dry fully before going to bed, and use white or old pillowcases and towels. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying, and rinse the sink after use to remove any traces of the product.
Yes — benzoyl peroxide can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. While using Duac, always apply an oil-free sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before going outdoors, wear protective clothing where possible, and avoid sunbeds entirely. Applying Duac in the evening rather than the morning can also help reduce daytime sun sensitivity. If you notice unusual redness or a skin reaction after sun exposure, stop using Duac and speak to your doctor.
This is an important practical point — Duac gel must be stored in the fridge. It should be kept at between 2°C and 8°C and must not be frozen. Once you have opened the tube, it should be used within 60 days and then discarded. Do not keep it past this date, even if there is product remaining in the tube.
Duac gel is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. There is insufficient safety data on the use of Duac in pregnant women, and as a precaution it should be avoided. If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or currently breastfeeding and need acne treatment, speak to your GP — they can advise on safer alternatives that are more appropriate for your circumstances.
