Flixonase Nasal Spray treats hay fever and seasonal allergies effectively by reducing nasal inflammation. Its active ingredient, fluticasone propionate, relieves nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, and nasal discharge. Flixonase offers allergy sufferers relief due to its simple to use device and rapid onset of action. (Available in 150-dose spray pack).
Flixonase is a prescription-strength corticosteroid nasal spray containing 50 micrograms of fluticasone propionate per spray. It's used to prevent and treat the nasal symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and year-round allergies such as dust mite and pet allergies (perennial rhinitis). It works by reducing inflammation in the lining of the nasal passages, helping to relieve a blocked, runny, or itchy nose and sneezing. Fluticasone propionate is one of the most potent corticosteroids available in a nasal spray, yet when used at the recommended dose it has no detectable effect on the rest of the body, making it a very well-tolerated option for regular use. A consultation with one of our clinicians at Access Doctor is required before it can be prescribed.
Like all corticosteroid nasal sprays, Flixonase needs to be used regularly before you feel the full benefit — it's not an instant-acting spray. Most people begin to notice an improvement in their nasal symptoms within 1 to 2 days of starting treatment, with the full effect usually felt after about a week of consistent daily use. For the best results, hay fever sufferers should ideally start using Flixonase 2 to 3 weeks before the hay fever season begins, so that it is already working effectively when pollen levels start to rise. Keep using it regularly even when your symptoms feel under control.
The usual starting dose for adults is two sprays into each nostril once a day, preferably in the morning. Once your symptoms are well controlled, this may be reduced to one spray in each nostril once a day as a maintenance dose. Always shake the bottle before use and prime the pump before using it for the first time by pressing it until a fine mist appears. Blow your nose gently beforehand, tilt your head slightly forward, and direct the nozzle away from the middle of your nose. Never exceed two sprays into each nostril twice a day. Do not share your nasal spray with anyone else.
Flixonase is suitable for both short-term seasonal use during hay fever season and longer-term use for year-round allergies, under medical supervision. Unlike some corticosteroid nasal sprays that are limited to 3 months, fluticasone can be used for longer periods when prescribed and monitored by a doctor. Always use the lowest dose that keeps your symptoms under control. If your symptoms are not improving after 7 days of regular use, speak to your GP or pharmacist.
Flixonase is generally very well tolerated and side effects are usually mild. The most commonly reported ones include headache, nosebleeds, a dry or sore nose or throat, and an unpleasant taste or smell — these affect up to 1 in 10 users. In rare cases, blurred vision or changes in eyesight can occur, particularly with long-term use. If you notice any changes to your vision while using Flixonase, speak to your doctor promptly. Very rarely, a serious allergic reaction can occur — symptoms include wheezing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe breathing difficulties. If this happens, stop using the spray immediately and call 999 or go to your nearest A&E.
This is an important question for anyone using Flixonase over a long period of time. Long-term use of corticosteroid nasal sprays has been associated with an increased risk of eye conditions such as cataracts and raised pressure inside the eye (glaucoma), although this is uncommon. If you use Flixonase regularly and notice any changes in your vision, eye pain, or blurred vision, speak to your doctor as soon as possible. Regular eye checks are advisable for those using any steroid nasal spray over a prolonged period.
Flixonase is not recommended during pregnancy unless your doctor considers it absolutely necessary. While the amount of fluticasone absorbed into the bloodstream from a nasal spray is very small, there is insufficient evidence to confirm complete safety in human pregnancy. If you are suffering from severe hay fever or rhinitis during pregnancy, speak to your GP before using Flixonase — they can weigh up the risks and benefits and advise on the safest treatment option for you. If you are breastfeeding, Flixonase is unlikely to pass into breast milk in significant amounts at nasal spray doses, but as a precaution, always check with your doctor before using it while breastfeeding.
