Used to treat long-term skin infections including acne. Acne appears as blackheads and whiteheads which people often refer to as pimples or spots. Lymecycline is an antibiotic that stops the growth of bacteria that causes acne and starts to work after a few weeks of treatment.
Lymecycline is a prescription-only oral antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline family, and it's one of the most commonly prescribed treatments for moderate to severe acne in the UK. It works by killing the bacteria that cause acne — known as Propionibacterium acnes — and also has anti-inflammatory properties that help to calm the redness and swelling associated with spots. It is particularly useful for acne that is widespread on the face, chest, or back, or that hasn't responded adequately to topical treatments alone. For the best results, it is usually prescribed alongside a topical acne cream or gel. A consultation with one of our clinicians at Access Doctor is required before it can be prescribed.
Take one 408mg capsule once a day, usually in the morning. Swallow it whole with a full glass of water — do not break or chew it. Taking it with food can help to reduce the risk of nausea and stomach upset. After taking it, stay upright for at least 30 minutes — do not lie down straight away, as this can cause heartburn or irritation to the throat. Try to take it at the same time each day to keep it working consistently. Do not take lymecycline within 2 hours of indigestion remedies or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, or iron, as these can reduce how well it is absorbed.
Lymecycline starts working as soon as you begin taking it, but visible improvements in your skin typically take longer to appear. Most people notice a meaningful improvement after 6 to 8 weeks of consistent daily use, with the best results usually seen after 8 to 12 weeks. Treatment typically lasts between 3 and 6 months. It is important to keep taking lymecycline regularly even if you don't see immediate results — stopping too soon can cause your acne to return. If there has been no noticeable improvement after 8 weeks, speak to your clinician at Access Doctor, who can review your treatment.
Most people tolerate lymecycline well. The most commonly reported side effects include nausea, heartburn, indigestion, stomach pain, diarrhoea, and headache — these are usually mild and often improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Taking it with food can help to reduce stomach-related side effects. Some women may experience a flare-up of thrush during treatment. In rare cases, more serious side effects can occur — if you notice yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark urine, or pale stools, stop taking lymecycline and contact your GP promptly, as these can occasionally indicate liver problems. A severe allergic reaction is very rare but possible — if you experience swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, call 999 immediately.
Yes — like other tetracycline antibiotics, lymecycline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn or a skin rash after even relatively short sun exposure. It is important to apply a high-factor sunscreen (SPF 50+) every day while taking lymecycline, wear protective clothing in strong sunlight, and avoid sunbeds altogether during treatment. If you notice unusual redness or a rash after sun exposure, contact your doctor.
An occasional drink is unlikely to cause serious harm, but it is best to keep alcohol to a minimum while taking lymecycline. Alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic and may increase the risk of side effects such as nausea, stomach upset, and dizziness. If you drink regularly or heavily, speak to your clinician at Access Doctor, as lymecycline may not be the most suitable treatment for you.
Lymecycline does not reduce the effectiveness of any form of contraception, including the combined pill, mini pill, or other methods. However, if you experience severe diarrhoea for more than 24 hours while taking it, your contraceptive pill may not be absorbed properly and may offer less protection during that time. If this happens, use additional contraception such as condoms until your next period starts.
No — lymecycline is not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Like other tetracycline antibiotics, it can cause permanent staining of the developing baby's teeth and may harm bone development. If you discover you are pregnant while taking lymecycline, stop immediately and contact your GP. If you need acne treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, your doctor can advise on safer alternatives. Lymecycline is not related to penicillin, so it is safe for people with a penicillin allergy.
