What is Skinoren cream and what is it used for?

Skinoren is a topical cream that is used to treat acne. The active ingredient of Skinoren cream is azelaic acid.

It functions in two ways; namely, it inhibits the growth of keratin cells that block pores and sebaceous glands, thereby causing spots, and it also kills the bacteria which live on your skin and can lead to acne.

How does Skinoren cream work?

Azelaic acid treats acne in two ways. It reduces keratin cells on the surface of the skin. Surface skin cells can mix with sebum, which is a natural oily substance that is produced by the sebaceous glands beneath our skin. Whenever keratin skin cells mix with sebum they can form a plug, which blocks pores on the skin.

Blackheads and spots can develop as a result. Skinoren prevents the formation of pore-blocking plugs by reducing keratin skin cell growth.

The cream also kills the bacteria associated with acne (propionibacterium). Sebum is the main source of food for this organism. As the bacteria feed, this irritates the sebaceous glands, causing them to become inflamed and infected and resulting in acne symptoms.

By reducing the sebum growth on which the propionibacterium feed, azelaic acid reduces bacterial numbers allows the sebaceous glands to heal naturally, reducing irritation and inflammation.

Similarly, azelaic acid affects melanin production in the skin, which is why some people use it to treat hyperpigmentation and dark underarm skin.

Some dermatologists prescribe Skinoren cream for rosacea, acne scarring and dark spots

Researchers have also found that it is useful for treating hair loss (alopecia) in both males and females.

Skinoren directions

  • Skinoren cream should be applied twice daily, after washing affected areas.
  • It is recommended that those with sensitive skin only apply Skinoren cream once daily in the evening for the first week.
  • Continuous use of Skinoren cream should be limited to 12 months.

A single application of Skinoren cream should be sufficient to cover the entire facial area using a small amount (roughly 2.5cm).

Depending on the size of the affected area, it is important to judge how much should be applied to other areas.

Using Skinoren cream regularly for a number of months is essential to getting the best results. It usually takes four weeks for improvements to appear.

Skinoren cream uses

Skinoren cream primarily treats acne, (also known as acne vulgaris).

Whiteheads, pimples, and blackheads are all symptoms of acne, which appears when hair follicles become blocked. Teenagers are more prone to this condition, but it can affect anyone.

In some cases, Skinoren cream may also be prescribed for treating rosacea - a common skin disorder that is characterised by redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels. Additional symptoms may include swelling, pus-filled bumps, and thickened skin.

Skinoren's active ingredient, azelaic acid, has been shown to potentiate hair growth and treat alopecia in recent trials, but further research is needed.

Skinoren Cream for Acne Scars

Some people use Skinoren cream for acne scars as well as treating acne outbreaks.

Skinoren contains azelaic acid, which promotes cell turnover. The result is a reduction of severe scarring and a reduction in the production of pigments that can change your skin tone (melanin synthesis).

Skinoren side effects

Skinoren cream has the potential to cause an allergic reaction, like any other cream. We recommend doing a patch test before starting treatment.

Skinoren cream can cause the following side effects:

  • itching
  • redness
  • a rash
  • skin sensitivity to light
  • dry skin
  • a burning,tingling or stinging feeling

The patient information leaflet inclosed with your medication contains a full list of potential side effects.

Skinoren vs Finacea

Similar to Skinoren cream, Finacea is an anti-inflammatory topical treatment for acne and rosacea. Finacea is available as a cream as well as a gel formulation.

The active ingredient in both treatments is azelaic acid.

It is the strength of the treatment that makes Skinoren different from Finacea.

Finacea contains 15% azelaic acid, whereas Skinoren contains 20%.

The higher strength of Skinoren makes it suitable for treating cystic and hormonal acne, acne scars, dark spots, and rosacea. As a result of its lower strength, Finacea is more suitable for milder forms of acne and rosacea. Finacea is usually prescribed for rosacea, while Skinoren is prescribed for acne.

Finacea is not available over-the-counter in the UK in the same way as Skinoren cream. If you intend to purchase Finacea from a doctor or an online pharmacy, you will need a prescription.

If you order from Access Doctor, you will be asked to complete a short assessment before your doctor can write you a prescription to ensure Finacea is the appropriate treatment for you.

Skinoren Cream Reviews

After using the cream for a few weeks, Skinoren users report seeing significant changes in the condition of their skin. Some acne sufferers have praised the medication for its positive effects. Some say that Skinoren was the first treatment that worked for them after trying several others.

The cream is claimed to work but it can take time to show results. However, the cream does leave skin looking soft and healthy.

Rosacea sufferers have also commented that Skinoren relieves their symptoms by reducing redness.

Most users have given Skinoren cream very positive reviews in treating acne and rosacea following an accurate assessment and diagnosis by a doctor or dermatologist.
